Our Program provides students with a learning-centered study of the various areas of law. Throughout our various program offerings, students are prepared for entry level legal professionals or transfer to a four-year school to continue their legal studies.

Program Details

The Legal Studies program at Allegany College of Maryland provides students with hands on education relating to various areas of law including criminal, civil litigation, family law, estate law, constitutional law, and various others. Legal Studies program is designed to provide students with a basic foundation on the many areas of law that make up today’s legal profession. This program is perfect for anyone interested in a career in the legal field—whether as a lawyer, paralegal, court clerk, or other legal professional. 

Students are provided with a variety of options for meeting their educational and career goals. Our courses are offered utilizing a variety of technology designed to accommodate our students’ busy lives. Many classes are available with online offerings or flex offerings wherein students who cannot make it to class can live-stream lessons or watch later.

Our graduates are eligible for entry-level paralegal, title abstracting, court and other office jobs upon graduation. Students wishing to continue their studies at a four-year school are able to complete many of their general education requirements in our Program.

The Program also offers a One Year Certificate Program for students wishing to gain a basic knowledge of the field of Legal Studies. All courses in the One Year Certificate Program are available with online options. 

Our curriculum is focused on Legal Studies in the 21st Century and is designed to provide learning-centered opportunities for our students. Our recent graduates have all obtained or transferred to a four-year institution to continue their studies.

Program Goals
  • Students will obtain a robust education in various areas of the law.

  • Students will recognize common ethical situations encountered by legal professionals and will be prepared to respond appropriately.

  • Students will demonstrate professional skills necessary for a career in the legal field, including oral and written communication and technology.

Learning Outcomes
  • Students will demonstrate a proficient knowledge of the various areas of law.

  • Students will describe the legal profession's basic ethical guidelines and apply them appropriately in hypothetical situations.

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to operate a basic word processing program, a spreadsheet program, and other technology used in the legal profession.

  • Students will appropriately use legal terminology.

  • Students will apply analytic, critical thinking and legal research skills to factual scenarios within a legal context

  • Students will draft legal research memoranda and other documents commonly prepared by legal professionals.
