What is Medical Information Technology?

Medical Information Technology (MIT) graduates prepare medical records and reports, maintain paper and electronic files, order supplies, utilize electronic health record software to manage patient records and daily office operations, perform accounting procedures, maintain patient confidentiality through abiding by HIPAA, work with medical insurance and coding, and receive patients in a variety of health care settings. The MIT program strives to meet student success in course content and the local job market with development activities such as mock interviews, resume writing, preparation for national industry certification exams, and internships with local employers. 

In this program, laboratory and classroom experiences are combined to prepare students for administrative careers in health care facilities. Program classes are optimized for virtual learning and students can complete all courses fully online.  Please note:  Degree and diploma students will complete on-site hours with an internship/capstone course to get hands-on learning experience with a local employer.

What are my career options?

The healthcare industry employs more people than any other industry sector in the area. Graduates are employed in hospitals, professional medical offices and with medical insurance companies.  The MIT program has recently worked with local employers such as Kings Daughters Medical Center, Pathways, Inc., We Care Medical, Premier Physical Therapy, and Ashland Children’s Clinic.

Length of Program

You can earn an associate in applied science degree in two years if you maintain full-time status.
