What is Architectural Technology
The Architectural Technology program provides instruction in the concepts and skills required for careers in architectural and related professions involved in designing for the built environment. At the core of the curriculum are a series of architectural studios where students prepare construction documents.
The series begins with a study of residential construction and culminates with commercial. Emphasis is placed on quality graphic communication, the development of design skills and a thorough understanding of a variety of construction types. Complementing the studio sequence are courses designed to provide instruction in building materials, structures, mechanical/electrical systems, professional practices, and architectural theory and history.
Electives in the program allow students to customize their education to fit their interests. Given the wide range of topics covered in the curriculum, graduates are prepared to find employment in architectural and related professional offices including positions in construction estimating, civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical/electrical engineering, construction management, computer-aided drafting, building code enforcement, specification writing, urban planning, historic preservation, contracting, sub-contracting, and building material sales and marketing. BCTC's Architectural Technology program is the only program of its kind in Kentucky.
The program's faculty consists of three full-time registered architects licensed in the state of Kentucky and adjunct faculty who are specialists in their areas of expertise such as construction management, building codes, and architectural illustration.
Students in the program develop skills necessary for the preparation of construction documents from schematic design approval into design development, contract documents, and contract administration phases for the built environment.
This unique program offers important educational opportunities outside the classroom, including field trips, design competitions, professional networking, and internships. Many of these activities are made possible through the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), a student-run professional organization.
For students who would like to pursue a bachelor's degree, BCTC's Architectural Technology program has transfer agreements in place with four-year schools in programs such as Architecture, Construction Management, and Landscape Architecture.
Get started with Architectural Technology
BCTC's Architectural Technology program is located at the Cooper Campus. The courses are focused on individualized instruction and problem solving with a combination of lecture and hands-on lab activities.
Assignments can vary from completing design or construction documents to case study models where students apply the principles they are learning to real-world applications. Students will gain practical experience by writing, speaking, and presenting in all of their classes, preparing them for future employment.
Financial aid and scholarships specifically for Architectural Technology students are available.
Architectural Technology graduates are sought after by employers and starting salaries for program graduates in entry level positions range from $15 to $25 per hour.
We have articulated agreements with the University of Kentucky College of Design and Savannah College of Art and Design for students wanting to obtain an architectural license by attending an accredited college and we also have articulation agreements with EKU and NKU for students wanting to obtain a Construction Management degree.

The Architectural Technology program full time faculty consists of two licensed architects. It's important to us to have licensed professional architects to guide our students. They provide a high-quality level of practical instruction.
In addition, there are a number of adjunct faculty who bring their personal experience and expertise in various areas of Architecture to the classroom.
Our full time and adjunct faculty are uniquely qualified to help you attain your goals with backgrounds ranging from architectural practice to construction to building code enforcement. The full-time faculty have worked in professional architectural offices accumulating over 30 years of experience combined. In addition, adjunct faculty are valued for the depth and breadth they bring to the program. All adjunct faculty have expertise in the subjects they instruct with specialized knowledge in construction management, building materials, computer 3D modeling, building code enforcement, and presentation drawings.

The catalog describes the course requirements for completing the credential. Students are required to schedule an appointment with their assigned academic advisor to ensure achievement of their academic goals.
We are in the approval process for a both a Certificate and Diploma in Residential Design that can be completed entirely online. If interested, please contact our Program Coordinator for more information.

You can earn an associate in applied science degree in two years if you maintain full-time
status.
