What is Radiography?

The Radiography program at Bluegrass Community and Technical College is a full-time 21 month Associated in Applied Science Degree which combines academic and laboratory courses with high technology clinical instructions.  A new class is accepted in late spring for the upcoming fall semester.  A student will receive his/her clinical education in numerous hospitals located in the Lexington metropolitan region.  

This program prepares the individual to become a radiographer which utilizes radiation to obtain images for medical purposes. The radiographer is prepared to administer ionizing radiation for medical diagnostic imaging purposes. Emphasis is on radiation protection and quality patient care.

Radiography is both an art and a science. You'll use radiation to provide images of the human body’s tissues, organs, bones, and vessels. Radiologists (physicians who have had special training in interpreting x-ray images) read or diagnose these images. Treatment of patients depends on the accurate and precise production of radiographic examinations.

The radiographer is an essential member of the health care team. The body part of the patient must be positioned, and only the amount of radiation necessary to produce a quality diagnostic image must be applied. These are two important aspects of the responsibilities of the radiographer. Radiation, when used by persons uneducated in its characteristics and potential hazards, can be dangerous to the patient and the user. The radiographer understands radiation and knows how to produce quality diagnostic examinations safely. This protects both the patient and the radiographer.

With this knowledge, radiography is a safe career. It is also a satisfying career. The radiographer contributes a special talent to help diagnose injury and disease.

Enrolled students must achieve a minimum grade of "C" in each Radiography course. Courses emphasize radiation protection and quality patient care. 

We also prepare our students with: 

  • Specialized courses in radiography
  • Concentrated study in the basic sciences, mathematics, and general education

The curriculum requires attendance in the summer session, fall, and spring semesters. 

American Registry of Radiologic Technologists

After completing the competency-based education curriculum, a qualified student is eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) certification examination. A prospective radiography student is advised that the ARRT examination board may not accept a student's application if he/she has been convicted of a felony.

Admissions

PRE-ADMISSION CONFERENCE

The pre-admission conference is designed to provide information and answer questions about the admissions process and requirements for the radiography program offered by Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC).  Students who want to be considered for the Associate of Applied Science Degree, Radiography Class must attend a pre-admission conference.  March 1 is the deadline for students to complete the application process and to submit all required documents to the BCTC Selective Admissions Office for the radiography program applications file. 

Virtual Pre-Admission Conference Information

  • Preadmission conference for Radiography will be held virtually for Fall 2024. Email lesley.klosterman@kctcs.edu for details about the preadmission conference.

In addition to attending the pre-admission conference, the following documents must be submitted to the BCTC Admissions Office by March 1 to complete the applicant file.

  1. Application for admission to Bluegrass Community and Technical College. This must be updated on an annual basis.
  2. Official high school transcript (with graduation date) indicating that the applicant has or will complete a high school course of study or a passing GED® official score report.
  3. Official Transcripts* of all post-secondary education or training.

ADMISSION PROCESS

Students will be responsible for collecting all documents for the admission process and submitting to the Office of Admissions or the Selective Admissions Department(s) as a completed application. Incomplete files will not be accepted.

The following information has been taken from the Rules of the Senate of KCTCS and is subject to change without notice. Admission to the Radiography Program is open to all qualified students regardless of economic or social status, and without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, marital status, beliefs, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical or mental disability.

Each applicant must submit the following credentials to the Office of Admission:

  1. Completed application for admission to the college
  2. Transcripts of all post-secondary education or training

Each applicant must complete the following for the Office of Selective Admission:

  1. Create a Selective Admission System Account
  2. Submit Transcripts of all post-secondary education or training
  3. Submit documentation of pre-admission conference
  4. Completed application submitted by March 1st

Important Notice

You will also need to submit a current copy your active State Nurse Aide registry from the website

  • NAA 100 is offered at BCTC and will enable students to meet the active status on a state nurse aide registry.

*Please try to have all documents submitted by February 15th to enable the selective admission office to prepare student files.

PREFERENCE CATEGORIES

Admission to the Radiography Program is open to all qualified students regardless of economic or social status, and without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, marital status, age, national origin or disability.

Preference may be given to applicants who have:

  • Applicants who have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better (4 point scale) in 10 hours or more of college credit applicable to the radiography program,
  • Applicants who have completed the biological and physical sciences and mathematics courses listed in the radiography curriculum with a grade of C or better,
  • Applicants who are registered and/or licensed in an allied health or nursing profession,
  • Applicants who have active status on a state nurse aide registry.

Note: Applicants whose credentials fall below the minimum criteria may be informed of an early decision regarding their admission status.

Transfer Opportunities

A unique partnership exists between Eastern Kentucky University and Bluegrass Community and Technical College. In 2001, BCTC and EKU began a process of establishing opportunities for graduates of BCTC to continue their education at EKU. Opportunities for BCTC graduates to earn a BS degree in either Health Education or Health Services Administration.

Opportunities also exist between Morehead State University and KCTCS. Morehead offers BS degree with a focus in advance technology.

The University of Kentucky offers a baccalaureate degree in Clinical Leadership and Management for experienced health care professionals to gain education and skills in management.

Program Location

The Radiography program is located in Lexington on Leestown Campus, in the M Building. Students may choose to take all prerequisite and general education coursework online or at any BCTC campus.
