Program Description

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) curriculum is a career program in which the student earns the AAS degree. In addition to taking general core courses, certain liberal arts and science requirements, and specialized courses in medical laboratory technology, the student has a requirement to train in state-of-the-art hospital laboratories. Upon completion, students will to sit for the Medical Laboratory Technician exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Upon passing the exam graduates will become nationally certified and earn the NYS Clinical Laboratory Technician license.

    MLT Study Lab Supervisor Job Description

    Primary duties will include:

    • Coordinate and supervise the MLT study lab to ensure it remains open with qualified MLT tutors. This includes creating and maintaining the tutor schedule and advertising the study labs availability.
    • Tutor MLT students and Alumni during available study lab hours online, in-person and as an embedded tutor during class lab sessions.
    • Provide guidance to teaching faculty and students on how to use laboratory facilities in an appropriate and safe manner as it relates to equipment used in the study lab.
    • Coordinate with senior CLT for MLT to help manage the MLT laboratories including the study lab and ensure that the right equipment, tools, chemicals and other materials are adequately stocked and kept in working condition as it relates to equipment used in the study lab.
      • When it comes to bulleted items 3 and 4, the MLT study lab Supervisor is advised to coordinate with the Senior CLT’s in MLT.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Associates degree in an appropriate discipline and 1 year of related experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree (bachelor’s degree can be substituted for up to two years of required related experience.)
    • Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse backgrounds
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators
    • Strong organizational, project management, communication, and facilitation skills
    • Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities
    • Strong academic advisement skills
    • Understanding of Financial Aid implications on advisement
    • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, and aptitude to learn new systems as needed.

    • Offers comprehensive and intrusive advisement to full-time and part-time students
    • Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses
    • Monitors students’ performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students’ problems regarding curricular requirements
    • Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits
    • Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines
    • Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling
    • Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses
    • May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed
    • May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling

    Part -time Dedicated MLT Academic Advisor Job Description

    Primary duties will include:

    • Deliver comprehensive advisement services to an assigned group of students through degree completion;
    • Conduct or support delivery of weekly student seminars on issues of importance to students;
    • Review student progress and track student use of academic support services;
    • Conduct regular outreach to faculty and other college staff as needed to support student success;
    • Maintain accurate tracking data and notes for each assigned student, recommending appropriate referrals and opportunity programs;
    • Support annual recruitment of new students into the program;
    • Organize periodic special events and programs for students, faculty and staff; and
    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the MLT Program Director.

    Learning Outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Technician program requirements, students will be able to:

    1. Accurately perform analytical testing on identified patient samples using appropriate reagents, method calibrators, controls, instruments, and diagnostic
      analyzers.
    2. Differentiate between normal and abnormal cells and results, determine necessary follow up testing, carry out additional testing, as needed.
    3. Adhere to strict safety and privacy requirements in the academic and professional setting.
    4. Demonstrate critical thinking skills for problem-solving in laboratory and clinical settings.
    5. Demonstrate professionalism in the classroom and workplace and qualify for potential employment as a technician or technologist in a medical laboratory facility.

    Internships

    The program includes a 15 week internship at clinical affiliate sites throughout NYC. The internship provides practical hands-on experience that prepares the student for a career as a Medical Laboratory Technician.

    Preparing You for ASCP Certification 

    Students graduating from the MLT are eligible to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification examination.* Passing this exam earns graduates the NYS CLT(Technician) License. This license is needed for employment in any NYS clinical Laboratory.
