Medical Office Professions

Sandburg offers both a Medical Office Professional degree and a Medical Office Assistant certificateThe program prepares you to work in a medical office in four semesters. By completing the first two semesters of this degree, you earn the medical office assistant certificate. Courses in medical coding, insurance and billing, anatomy and physiology, biomedical ethics and diversity are completed during the remaining two semesters.

Medical office assistants perform routine clerical and organizational tasks. They organize files, draft messages, schedule appointments and support other staff. Carl Sandburg College certificate program prepares you with the skills needed for medical office work, including electronic health records, document processing, medical terminology, customer service and communication skills.

 

Admission requirements

Medical Office Professions is an open-enrollment program, meaning there isn't any criteria you must meet to be admitted. If you're interested in enrolling in this program, complete our steps to enroll, which includes completing the free application for admission.

We encourage all prospective students to visit campus. We have several Explore Sandburg open houses throughout the year, or you can schedule a campus visit at your convenience.

Employment

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a 23% employment increase of medical assistants from now to 2028. An aging baby-boom population will generate a need for more healthcare services, which will result in a demand for assistants to perform administrative and clinical duties.  (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2020).

Program format

The Medical Office Professions program offers both online and face-to-face class options; however, the program can not be done entirely online. 

Class formats

Sandburg offers courses in a variety of formats to best fit the needs of our students. To determine the formats for specific courses, please refer to our course schedule.

Regardless of the course format, you should have access to a reliable computer with broadband (high-speed) internet. All courses use online resources and require students to access course information through mySandburg. Accessing courses through a phone is discouraged. Both campuses have open computer labs for student use.

Internship requirements

The Medical Office Professional degree requires an internship as a graduation requirement. Internships are an excellent way to gain experience in your chosen career field and stand out as a competitive candidate in the job market after graduation.
