What is Drafting & Design Concentration A.A.S.?

The Engineering Systems Technology program is designed to provide students with an effective blending of diverse industrial skillsets through a variety of specializations, preparing program completers with the skills needed for immediate entrance into the industrial workforce. Skills emphasized in the program include, but are not limited to: advanced manufacturing applications, computerized design and industrial equipment programming operations management and maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems.

The Engineering Systems Technology degree is designed for those students interested in drafting and design with a choice of emphases in architecture, civil and/or mechanical drafting. This program incorporates the knowledge and skills needed to prepare the student for numerous job and career opportunities in their field. This is a technical program designed to prepare students for employment and is not designed as a transfer program, although many institutions accept all or part of the course work toward the bachelor's degree. 

This career degree will specifically prepare students interested in drafting and technical design in the manufacturing, architecture and civil industries to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation. While in the A.A.S. program, students will also have the opportunity to complete specified certificates in architectural design, civil technology and/or mechanical drafting. This program is filled with hands-on learning opportunities as well as real world applications.

Drafters typically do the following:

  • Design plans using computer-aided design (CAD) software
  • Work from rough sketches and specifications created by engineers and architects
  • Design products with engineering and manufacturing techniques
  • Add details to architectural plans from their knowledge of building techniques
  • Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for new products
  • Work under the supervision of engineers or architects

What will I learn?

Upon completion of this program, Students will be able to do the following:

  1. The graduate will have demonstrated an intermediate level of competency with computer applications common to modern industry, including 2-dimensional computer aided drafting software.
  2. The graduate will have demonstrated a thorough understanding of industrial safety codes and practices necessary to function safely in an industrial environment.
  3. The graduate will have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the various materials used to manufacture products, along with the various manufacturing processes used to convert these materials into finished goods.
  4. The graduate will have demonstrated the ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.

What is Civil Technology Technical?

Drafters use software to convert the designs of engineers and architects into technical drawings. Most workers specialize in architectural, civil, electrical, or mechanical drafting and use technical drawings to help design everything from microchips to skyscrapers.  Drafters typically need specialized training, which can be accomplished through a technical program that leads to a certificate or an associate’s degree in drafting.

Many drafters are referred to as CAD operators. Using CAD systems, drafters create and store technical drawings digitally. These drawings contain information on how to build a structure or machine, the dimensions of the project, and what materials are needed to complete the project. Civil drafters prepare topographical maps used in construction and civil engineering projects, such as highways, bridges, and flood-control projects.

What will I learn?

What is Mechanical Drafting Technical?

Drafters use software to convert the designs of engineers and architects into technical drawings. Most workers specialize in architectural, civil, electrical, or mechanical drafting and use technical drawings to help design everything from microchips to skyscrapers.  Drafters typically need specialized training, which can be accomplished through a technical program that leads to a certificate or an associate’s degree in drafting.

Mechanical drafters prepare layouts that show the details for a wide variety of machinery and mechanical tools and devices, such as medical equipment. These layouts indicate dimensions, fastening methods, and other requirements needed for assembly. Mechanical drafters sometimes create production molds.  Many drafters are referred to as CAD operators. Using CAD systems, drafters create and store technical drawings digitally. These drawings contain information on how to build a structure or machine, the dimensions of the project, and what materials are needed to complete the project.

Most workers specialize in architectural, civil, electrical, or mechanical drafting and use technical drawings to help design everything from microchips to skyscrapers.  Drafters typically need specialized training, which can be accomplished through a technical program that leads to a certificate or an associate’s degree in drafting.

Architectural drafters draw architectural and structural features of buildings for construction projects. These workers may specialize in a type of building, such as residential or commercial. They may also specialize by the materials used, such as steel, wood, or reinforced concrete.

What will I learn?

Upon completion of this program, Students will be able to do the following:
