What is Early Childhood Education?

WHAT is an A.A.S. in Early Childhood Education? An Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Early Childhood Education is a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited two-year-degree program that guides students who plan to work with children ages birth to third grade, in or out of the classroom, and their families. This degree articulates with area colleges and universities for students that desire to seek a bachelor’s degree or higher.

WHAT is an Early Childhood Technical Certificate? The Early Childhood Technical Certificate is embedded in the two-year degree and enables the student to obtain developmentally appropriate educational coursework that prepares them to work successfully with young children.

What will I learn?

The Early Childhood Education Program supports the professional development of the student through a comprehensive curriculum offering the student both the theoretical and practical experiences concerning young children and families.

Program Learning Outcome #1:  Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, students using their understanding of young children’s characteristics and needs, and the multiple influences on developmental learning will be able to create appropriate learning environments for children birth through age 8.

Program Learning Outcome #2:  Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, students will be able to develop strategies that promote appropriate partnerships between students, teachers, families, and their diverse communities.

Program Learning Outcome #3:  Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, students will be able to create appropriate goals, curriculum, teaching strategies, and assessment plans based on observable student learning outcomes.

Program Learning Outcome #4: Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, students will be able to choose developmentally effective approaches/strategies to connect with young children.

Program Learning Outcome #5:  Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, students will be able to use content knowledge to create, implement, and evaluate a challenging curriculum that is developmentally appropriate to young children’s characteristics and needs.

Program Learning Outcome #6:  Upon completion of an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education, students will be able to conduct themselves as early childhood professionals.

Accreditation

What are my options to pay for this degree?

  • Apply for financial aid at www.FAFSA.gov
  • A student is encouraged to apply early for financial aid. He/she must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the FAFSA Renewal Application as soon as possible after October 1 to ensure that the Financial Aid Office receives the Institutional Student Information Record and other documents prior to the priority deadline. July 1st is the priority deadline for applying for the fall semester and December 1st for the spring semester.

Spring Semester Milestones

Check with the Math Department to see if  MATH 1000 Math Essentials is required before taking MATH 1130 College Algebra or MATH 1410 Math for Elementary School Teachers. MATH 1510 Intro to Statistics does not require MATH 1000 as a prerequisite.

  • Successful completion of learning support required or two years of high school algebra for MATH 1130, MATH 1530, or MATH 1410.

  • A grade of C or better is required in all ECED courses.

FINANCIAL AID ALERT - Now is the time to begin thinking about financial aid for next semester. Be sure to check your Cleveland State email daily for deadlines, announcements, and award updates for the upcoming academic year. Please contact your success coach or academic advisor if you have any questions. 

ADVISING and REGISTRATION - Work with your success coach and/or academic advisor to discuss Summer and Fall registration. Remember, advising is key to success! If you are planning to transfer to a four-year university, make an appointment with your academic advisor soon. They can assist you with making the right course selections, as well as help you begin the transfer process. 

Cooperative Education (Work-Based Learning) and Service-Learning are great ways to gain hands-on experience in your career field and make sure your selected career is a good fit for you.   • GRADUATION - Apply to graduate by completing the online Intent to Graduate form. This can be found under the Graduation Tab within the Registration Tools and Forms on Cougarnet. You will need to schedule to take your exit exam and/or program test at mycs.cc/testing. These will be taken in the Testing Center.
