This 14-week Powerline Apprentice Program is designed to provide students with the basic skills needed to launch a career with electrical utilities and/or contractors in the area of underground and overhead line work. Safety will be emphasized throughout the course. In addition, students will have the opportunity to earn certifications in First Aid/CPR, OSHA 10, flagger certification, competent Person in Trenching and Excavation, and a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) this course is registered for Pre-Apprenticeship by the NC Department of Commerce. Training program is held at the Coastal Carolina Community College (CCCC) campus Monday-Friday from 0730-1630.

Requirements: CDL Class A Permit, DOT Physical/Drug screen

Course length: 488 hours

Registration and Fees

The amount due at the time of registration is $440.  This includes registration and insurance fees and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) materials to be given to students during class.  PPE items include hard hat, gloves, eyewear, OSHA card, and flagger book.

Items that students need to purchase prior to first day of class:

  • Textbook (contact The College Store for details)
  • Lineman work boots (varies based on individual’s preference, approximately $175)
  • Class A CDL permit DMV office (NC DMV, $60)
  • DOT physical and drug test (varies per facility and insurance)

Electrical powerline installers and repairers employment field is projected to grow 16% from 2016 to 2026.

Regional Wage Outlook

Median Wage – $59,954 per year.  Highly experienced workers can earn up to $84,337.
