Professional Truck Driver I

CLASS A CDL PROGRAMS

CLASS a MANUAL/AUTOMATIC

The objective of  Professional Truck Driver I  is to provide our students with basic knowledge and skills in preparation for successfully completing the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam. An individual successfully completing this program will experience the ability to safely operate a tractor-trailer, as an entry level truck driver. A full-time student will be scheduled for 200 clock hours to be completed within 5 weeks. 

Classroom/Lab/Pre-Requisite

This section consists of 40 clock hours. Students will complete assignments utilizing an online platform and and also test towards their Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) on campus with an examiner. CLP tests include: special requirements, general knowledge, combination vehicles and air brakes. Students will also be provided study material for the optional endorsements which include Hazmat, Doubles and Triples and Tankers.   This course does satisfy the ELDT Class A requirement.

BACKING SKILLS INSTRUCTION

This section consists of 80 clock hours. Behind the wheel training and observation, is designed to provide students with the ability to safely maneuver a tractor-trailer unit into a park position. This instruction includes straight-line backing, alley docking, off-set backing, blind-side parallel parking, coupling & uncoupling, 8-step brake test and pre-trip inspection.  This course does satisfy the ELDT Class A requirement.

Driving Skills Instruction

This section consists of 80 clock hours.  Behind the wheel training and observation, is designed to prepare students to safely operate a tractor-trailer unit. Students will practice the proper methods of shifting techniques (in a manual tractor), approaching intersections, left/right hand turns, entering/exiting freeway ramps, and using mirrors while driving both forward and backwards in congestive traffic. Students will be required to maintain a Driver’s Daily Log. Progress will be documented daily. On the last day of class/road training, student will be given a driver’s certification road test. Students may have the option of testing in a manual or automatic tractor. Students must successfully achieve this certification to be eligible to attempt final skills test.  This course does satisfy the ELDT Class A requirement.

 

CLASS a Non-Air brake

The objective of the Professional Truck Driver I program is to provide our students with basic knowledge and skills in preparation for successfully completing the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam. An individual successfully completing this program should have experienced the ability to safely operate a truck without air brakes attached to a trailer.  A full-time student will be scheduled for 120 clock hours be completed within 3 weeks.

Classroom/Lab/Pre-Requisite

This section, consisting of 30 clock hours( Lab/Pre-Requisite), is designed to provide the student with the information needed to obtain the requirements for a CLP (Class A Learners Permit), which includes Special Requirements, General Knowledge, Combination Vehicle. The applicant will be provided the required curriculum that is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) to all Entry Level training applicants prior to being eligible to begin the hands on training to earn your CDL license through the Department of Public Safety.

Note: Del Mar College is a certified 3rd Party Testing facility. DMC Students who successfully pass certification will be scheduled for their CDL driving skills test at our facility.
