The Associates of Applied Science Degree in Court Reporting provides students with the skills and knowledge required to pass
the Texas Certified Shorthand Reporter, and the National Court Reporters Association examination. This program also offers
a Certificate of Completion in Court Reporting for Legal Stenographer/Scopist.
Using state-of-the-art technology, court reporters capture the spoken word on a shorthand machine, then transcribe it to
produce an accurate, verbatim record. The Court Reporting Program offered by El Paso Community College provides the training
to prepare a student for a profession that offers the freedom and flexibility to choose the type of work that will fit
an individual lifestyle.
Our program includes a conflict-free theory-based classroom training environment, additional training on career-specific
software and transcript production.
Programs
Court ReportingAssociate of Applied Science
The two-year Associate of Applied Science Degree in Court Reporting teaches students the skills and knowledge needed to pass the Texas Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) Examination and the National Court Reporters Association (RPR) Examination such as stenography, transcription, note taking, audio/visual recording, courtroom etiquette, how to identify verbal and non-verbal cues; listening and interpreting; editing; and public speaking skills. Both CSR and RPR exams consist of a written knowledge exam (must score a 70% or better) and a skills exam (must type 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy). All applicants must be fingerprinted. In order to work as a court reporter in the State of Texas, you must be certified by the State. The capstone course for the AAS Degree is CRTR 2331, Court Reporter Certification Preparation.

Certificate of Completion (C1-CMSS)
The Certificate of Completion in Machine Shorthand Scopist provides students with the necessary knowledge, skills, and background to find employment preparing and editing transcripts for Certified Shorthand Reporters. Machine Shorthand Scopists assist with the following: attending depositions, hearings, proceedings, and other events that require written transcripts; capture spoken dialogue with specialized equipment such as stenographic machines, audio/visual devices, and covered microphones; reading/playing back testimony; review notes taken by Certified Shorthand Reporters; edit transcripts for errors; and provide copies of transcripts and recordings to the court. The capstone for the Certificate of Completion is CRTR 1406, Machine Shorthand II.
Students must type at least 25 words per minute on a typewriter before entering the program.

Realtime Closed Captioning/CARTCertificate of Completion
The Certificate of Completion in Realtime Closed Captioning/CART prepares students to be CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) assistants to hearing-impaired clientele or work in captioning services. Students learn realtime accuracy in addition to skills in stenography; transcription; notetaking; audio/visual recording; courtroom etiquette; how to identify verbal and non-verbal cues; listening and interpreting; editing; and public speaking skills. The capstone course for the Certificate of Completion is CRTR 2371, Preparation for the Certified Realtime Captioner (CRC).
