What is Electrical Technology?

If you plan to work in industrial, commercial or residential electricity, then the Electrical Technology program is for you.  This program will meet the training needs of two areas of concentration: Industrial Electrician or Construction Electrician.

You will learn electrical theory, industrial motor controls, programmable logic controllers, electrical panel building, pneumatic/hydraulic circuits, residential wiring, commercial wiring, and electrical troubleshooting.  Laboratory activities will give you the opportunity to work with installation projects, switching and control equipment, typically used in problem solving procedures, and the maintenance of electrical equipment.

What are my career choices?

Upon graduating from the Electrical Technology program, you will be ready for an entry level position in the industrial or construction trade.  Employment opportunities are primarily with manufacturing, residential/commercial contractors, and other various related fields.

Field Licensure Requirements

Students wanting to work in industry as an Automation Technician, Robot Technician, Process Control Technician, or Industrial Electrician do not need a State or Federal License.

Students wanting to work as a Residential or Commercial Electrician must follow the guidelines listed by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction.

Electrical Contractor requirements:

1. Has paid to the office the application fee not to exceed two hundred dollars ($200) and the appropriate examination fee, which shall not exceed the actual cost of examination;
   
   
2. Has achieved a passing score, as set by the office, on all portions of the examination required by the office. The office shall promulgate administrative regulations to specify who shall take the examination if the applicant is a business entity; and
   
   
3. Has submitted proof that he or she has complied with workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance laws and administrative regulations and has obtained a general liability insurance policy of not less than five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000).

Master Electrician requirements:

1. Has paid to the office the application fee not to exceed one hundred dollars ($100) and the appropriate examination fee not to exceed the actual cost of the examination;
   
   
2. Has completed:
   
   
   1. Six (6) years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade; and
      
      
   2. A training course in electrical work, acceptable to the office, or an additional two (2) years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade; and
      
      
3. Has achieved a passing score, as set by the office, on all portions of the examination required by the office.

Electrician requirements:

1. Has paid to the office the application fee not to exceed fifty dollars ($50) and the appropriate examination fee not to exceed the actual cost of the examination;
   
   
2. Has completed:
   
   
   1. Four (4) years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade; and
      
      
   2. A training course in electrical work, acceptable to the office, or an additional two (2) years of verifiable experience in the electrical trade; and
      
      
3. Has achieved a passing score, as set by the office, on all portions of the examination required by the office.

Where do I start?

Apply for admission to ECTC to receive information from the Admissions Office about submitting your placement test scores (ACT or other exams) and to schedule a meeting with an advisor to register for your classes.

Length of Program

You can earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in two years if you maintain full-time status.
