Magnetic Resonance Imaging

MRI Technologists are allied health professionals who use magnetic resonance imaging to capture 3D images of the body to determine pathology versus normal tissue. The MRI Technologist performs various diagnostic procedures under the supervision of a licensed radiologist and works closely with patients to provide instruction and quality care while producing quality images.

MRI is unique in the field of diagnostic imaging because of the manner in which images are obtained. MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio frequencies to create images of the patient’s internal structures. This is accomplished without the use of ionizing radiation.

In addition to supporting the mission and goals of Galveston College, the mission of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technology Program is to provide our students with an affordable, practical and realistic education that prepares them with the skills necessary to enter the workforce successfully and to excel in their professional and educational endeavors.

MRI technologist can work in various clinical environments such as hospitals, imaging centers, and outpatient facilities. For those who want to advance into other areas, opportunities exist in administration, research education, and sales. 

Depending on a number of factors, including geographic location, duties of employment and their own personal qualities, graduates can reasonably expect entry-level salaries ranging from $50,000 to $70,000 per year.

• Certificate – Magnetic Resonance Imaging

All prospective candidates who wish to be admitted to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technology program should contact the Program Director.

Applicants must:

1. Complete the requirements for admission to the College.  Admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the program.
2. Submit official transcripts from all Colleges and/or Universities that you have attended.
3. Submit a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Application to the Program Director.

Requirements to the College include:

1. Degree Plan must show evidence of:
   • An overall G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher from an accredited Radiologic Health Science Program.
   • Be a graduate of a two year accredited Radiologic Health Science Program in Radiography, Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine or Sonography.
   • Be a registered technologist (ARRT or NMTCB or ARDMS) by the start of the program.
2. Submit Program Application to the Program Director. The online instruction starts twice a year, fall and spring. 
3. Program applications are accepted twice per year. Applications that are submitted after the deadline will be reviewed at the discretion of the Selection Committee. Due to limited enrollment, we cannot accept every applicant. Applicants not admitted to the program must re-apply each semester. Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail of acceptance to the program.
4. Program application deadlines are:
   • June 30^th of each year for Fall semester
   • October 30^th of each year for Spring semester
5. Submit the following documents along with the MRI Program Application:
   • A current copy of Texas Medical Board certification and ARRT, NMTCB or ARDMS certificate (certification must be maintained throughout the course of study).
   • A current copy of an American Heart Health Care Provider level CPR certificate (certification must be maintained throughout the course of study).

Once Accepted into the MRI Program:

1. Complete the Hepatitis B immunization series including titer or show proof of illness. To be eligible to apply to the Program, the student must show proof that the immunization process has been started. The process needs to be completed by the start of the Program. (This process takes seven months. to complete).
2. Complete the Varicella immunization (Chicken Pox) or show proof of illness by the start of the program.
3. Complete the Bacterial Meningitis vaccination for all campus and hybrid course offerings (under the age of 22).
4. Complete a background check and a clear drug screening test through the College at students cost upon acceptance to the program. 

 

Course work from another program will be evaluated on an individual basis by the Program Director. A grade of “C” or better is required on all transferred prerequisite, general education and program specific courses. Transfer students from another program will be admitted on a space-available basis.

Transfer students must:

1. Complete admission requirements to Galveston College as well as the Program admission criteria.
2. Submit course syllabi for review, if requested by program coordinator.
3. Agree to a complete a disclosure of information form.

Course Substitution:

Any student choosing to substitute the RADR 2340; Sectional Anatomy for Imaging Professionals must submit the Course Substitution Form at the start of the Program along with a course description of the course where previously taken. It is highly recommended that although taken previously, you consider taking this course with the Program. It is a very detailed course and it can improve your chances of passing the national registry or serve as a refresher course for the national registry.
