Emergency Medical Services Technology / Paramedic
Emergency medical services (EMS) involves more than just a ride to the hospital in an ambulance or helicopter. It involves serious coordination between multiple people and agencies to respond to emergencies, sometimes involving life-or-death situations.
At Garden City Community College, our EMS program is designed around a flipped classroom. That means core content is delivered and completed on your own time, and the classroom is a "work-place" atmosphere where you perfect your skills, work on treatment modalities, and experience calls in your response area. During each class, a student is chosen to serve as a shift supervisor with responsibilities for his or her crew's completion of station duties, reports, and documentation of skill/in-service training. Hands-on training coupled with an up-to-date curriculum means our students are ready and prepared for their next call.
Students in the paramedic program at GCCC can work towards either an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) or Associate in Science (AS), and graduates are eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs certification exam for national and state certification.
Scholarship Opportunities
Scholarships are available for students in each of the Department of Public Safety programs at GCCC, including the Parademic or EMT programs. Students in technical programs are also eligible for grant and aid technical scholarships. You can visit the Financial Aid page or the Endowment Association website for more information about which scholarships you are eligible for.
The Department of Public Safety also hosts annual scholarship fundraiser events to help students with tuition expenses. The "Shoot for Scholarships" and "Ride for the Future" events are often well attended. Each year these events prove to be successful efforts by DPS to support students financially.
