What is Human Services?

Are you interested in helping individuals, groups and communities? The Human Services program at Gateway may be for you! Our program provides you with the knowledge and skills to qualify for entry-level positions in agencies that provide social, educational, advocacy, substance abuse and mental health services.

Transfer Opportunities –Our students are prepared for Bachelor’s degrees. Our transfer opportunities allow you to start your coursework at Gateway and complete your Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Addiction Counseling and related fields.

Preparing our students to transfer to a Bachelor's degree is a tenet of Gateway's Human Services Program! In 2020 and 2021, nine former Gateway Human Services students graduated with their Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from NKU. Five of these students graduate summa cum laude (3.9-4.0 GPA) and two graduated magna cum laude (3.75-3.9 GPA). Further, nine graduates of the Gateway Human Services program earned their Master of Social Work (MSW).

Students may be eligible for the KCTCS Scholars Award to use towards their Bachelor’s degree if they earn a 3.0 GPA (or higher) while at Gateway​.

What are my career options?

Social and human service assistants are employed in the health care and social assistance industries. State and local governments, primarily in public welfare agencies and facilities for mentally disabled and developmentally challenged individuals.

Gateway students and alumni are employed by or have completed their clinical practice at: Learning Grove, CHNK, Brighton Center, NECCO, The ION Center Northern Kentucky Community Action Commission, Family Nurturing Center, Life Learning Center, NorthKey Community Care, Mental Health America ,Transitions, Inc., Tristate Trauma Network, Welcome House, Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, Love Must Win, Mentoring Plus, and more.

What are my degree, diploma, or certificate options?

Human Services - AAS: 60 Total credit hours Academic Plan
Direct Support Work - Certificate: 15 Total Credit Hours  Academic Plan
Recovery Coach - Certificate: 24 Total Credit Hours  Academic Plan

Can I Continue My Education after Gateway? 

Yes! Graduates of the Human Services program have gone on to Northern Kentucky University, the University of Cincinnati, Union Institute and University, Eastern Kentucky University and several other schools.
