Phlebotomy
Every year, medical professionals draw blood to help physicians diagnose illness, treat patients, and save lives. Known as phlebotomy, the skill involves drawing blood for tests, transfusions, research, and blood donations. There is a need for responsible people with calm dispositions to work in the field of phlebotomy.
As a trained phlebotomist, you’ll be responsible for drawing a patient’s blood to obtain blood samples or collect donations. The Phlebotomy program is designed to prepare you to collect blood specimens by skin puncture and venipuncture. You’ll learn how to safely get samples using proper procedures, equipment, and techniques while maintaining governmental standards.
As a phlebotomist, you may find employment at facilities such as hospitals, patient service centers, life insurance companies, doctors’ offices, outreach services, and donor centers.

Instructor Meet and Greet
You have two opportunities to join us in-person to meet with the instructors and learn more about the program. Come every Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the SouthWest Skill Center OR every Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the 18th Street Campus for Hybrid Phlebotomy.
- Check-in at the front desk when you arrive.
- Please arrive early. Arrival more than five minutes late will result in not being permitted to attend
- Sessions are not held when GateWay is closed for a holiday.

The Phlebotomy program at GateWay Community College is a clock hour or non-credit program, which is a training program that provides skills for quick entry into the workforce. It has specific year-round start dates, and you attend classes four days a week, Monday-Thursday.
The Accelerated Basic Phlebotomy Program is comprised of two primary classes: PLC109 (Phlebotomy Basic Skills) and PLC111 (Specimen Processing and Advanced Techniques in Phlebotomy). Students are given the opportunity and are strongly encouraged to advance into PLC122 (Phlebotomy Practicum). Enrollment in the practicum requires students to fulfill Health and Safety requirements, which are covered during PLC109.
Virtual Information Sessions
If you are interested in this Healthcare program, you will be required to attend a Virtual Information/Advising Session that will provide in-depth information and enrollment guidance.

You also may take advantage of career services to gain skills in interviewing, resume writing, looking for a job and other career guidance. Through these services you will be better prepared to complete successful interviews and attain employment.

Certificate of Competency in Accelerated Basic Phlebotomy: $1,220 | 180 hours/2-3 months
Certificate of Competency in Phlebotomy Practicum: $615 | 120 hours/1 month
*Months based on four days a week at five hours per day/four weeks a month for the day program at SouthWest Skill Center, while the night program meets four nights a week for four hours/four weeks a month. Actual completion times may vary. Costs include tuition and lab fees. Amount based on current estimates and will vary. A separate $15 Registration Fee will be charged per academic year. This program is not financial aid eligible.
