Visual Arts at Highland
The Visual Arts program is designed to prepare the graduate for those intending to transfer to a college or university to complete a baccalaureate degree in visual art or with entry-level skills in the graphic design field. It is possible to complete the graphic design course in two years and enter the workforce. Through a special 2+2 Degree Plan, all program students have the option of a seamless transition to Western Illinois University (WIU) to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art or Graphic Design or a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art or Graphic Design.
The Visual Arts curriculum prepares students for the rapidly changing design field by honing their abilities and creativity to become visual explorers. Whether it be 2D or 3D design, art history, drawing, ceramics, or graphic design, students with visual arts training leave Highland with a strong foundation for a career in the exciting world of arts.
Associate of Arts
The Highland associate of arts degree in art (AA) provides the essential background knowledge for a student to succeed in the field of studio art, painting, drawing, and design. The program provides a comprehensive study of art, including art history and modern art, with studio experience. This HCC program is designed for a student pursuing a baccalaureate degree in visual art. However, it is also possible to start a career by applying the skills learned in this two-year program.
Students interested in pursuing a four-year degree in Studio Art or Graphic Design have a direct path to completing their Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art or Graphic Design or a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art or Graphic Design at Western Illinois University through a seamless transition program at Highland. Students should meet with an advisor to ensure specific requirements are met to transfer to another 4-year college or university.
Graphic Design
Highland’s graphic design associate of applied science program (AAS) is designed to provide entry-level job skills necessary in the graphic design field. By using HCC’s state-of-the-art computer software, students discover and master the fundamentals of typography, layout, and design, while creating projects. Students also explore web site design, animation, and multimedia.
Possible Career Paths
Art majors may pursue careers as illustrators, graphic designers, package designers, commercial designers, architectural designers, art historians, professional artists, and art educators.
