The curriculum for the Laboratory Sciences degree is designed with a common core of coursework providing interdisciplinary educational elements alongside of hands-on experiential training critical for student success. During the second year, students will concentrate their studies on the cannabis or medical laboratory curriculum tracks.
Medical Laboratory Sciences
The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) program provides students with the skills needed to collect samples and perform tests to analyze blood, body fluids, and other substances.
These tests help other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, detect, diagnose and treat diseases. At entry-level, the medical laboratory technician will possess the entry-level competencies necessary to perform routine clinical laboratory tests in areas such as Clinical Chemistry, Hematology/Hemostasis, Immunology, Immunohematology/Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Urine and Body Fluid Analysis, and Laboratory Operations.
The level of analysis ranges from waived and point of care testing to complex testing encompassing all major areas of the clinical laboratory. The medical laboratory technician will have diverse functions in areas of pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical processes. The medical laboratory technician will have responsibilities for information processing, training, and quality control monitoring wherever clinical laboratory testing is performed.

The Hocking College MLT program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Hocking College MLT Program makes outcome measures for the past three years available to prospective and enrolled students as per NAACLS guidelines. The outcome measures defined by NAACLS includes pass rates on the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Exam, graduation rates, attrition rates, and graduate placement rates for students entering the final half of the MLT Program.
The first cohort (2019) graduated in the summer of 2020. The outcome measures for those students entering the final half of the MLT Program for the past three years are as follows:
NAACLS ASCP BOC EXAM Benchmark : 75% of the students who graduate from the program and take the exam within one year of graduation, will obtain ASCP certification or similar certification.

2021 ASCP BOC Exam- 75% pass rate (3 out of 4 students)
2022 ASCP BOC Exam- 63% (5 out of 8 passed)
The three-year average certification pass rate is: 62%
*There were two students in the 2019 Cohort. The class was our first graduating class that graduated during the COVID pandemic in 2020. The student who failed the exam did go on to pass a registration exam but it was greater than one year after graduation. The second student who graduated during the following reporting period, decided to pursue furthering her education and not take the certification exam within one year of graduation.
NAACLS Benchmark: 70% of the students who begin the second half of the program will graduate. (The second half of the Hocking College Program begins the third semester.)

Laboratory Sciences Major in Medical Laboratory Checklist for Admission File Completion
All Medical Laboratory applicants are accepted into to the Associate of Science (AS) program and may begin taking general classes. The AS program is a pathway to the Medical Laboratory (MLT) program and allows you to complete general education requirements for Medical Laboratory. Upon successful completion of all MLT admission requirements, your academic program will be changed to Medical Laboratory.
Admission to the second semester of the MLT program follows a selective admission process and has additional admission requirements. Students with complete admission files by the last day of autumn semester will automatically be considered for admission to the second semester (spring semester) of the program. Required forms including physical exam and immunizations must be submitted by October 15th of each year with students notified of acceptance for the upcoming spring semester by November 1. Those not accepted will be considered for the following spring term(s). Please monitor your file completion progression.

1. High School Transcript or GED
Submit an official high school transcript indicating graduation from an accredited high school or proof of successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) test. Official transcripts must be mailed directly from your high school to the Hocking College Registrar’s Office (Hocking College, Attention Registrar’s Office, 3301 Hocking Parkway, Nelsonville OH 45764) or submitted through a formal transcript service such as Parchment or eScript. GED certificates must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office in the official format of the state in which you completed the GED. Faxed, emailed or hand carried transcripts are not accepted.
- If you are/were home schooled, submit a notarized homeschool transcript showing graduation from an approved homeschooling curriculum. The transcript must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office. If you did not complete an approved homeschool curriculum, you may be asked to submit General Education Development (GED) scores.
- If you completed high school outside of the United States, submit original transcripts (translated to English by a formal translation service if necessary) for schooling equivalent to a United States high school. Once received your transcript will be reviewed to determine if it meets the transcript requirement. It is recommended that you submit official documents in person. Original documents will be copied and returned to you. If you are unable to obtain an official transcript, it is recommended that you complete the General Education Development (GED) test.
2. Completion of Semester 1 Courses
Successfully complete all Semester 1 courses with a grade of “C” or higher.
- Incomplete (I) grades do not qualify for successful completion of a course.
- You may take a class no more than two (2) times to earn the “C” or higher grade. If you do not achieve the required
grade in two attempts, you are not eligible for the MLT program. - A C- grade does not qualify as successful completion of a course and must be repeated.
- Obtain an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) or 2.5.
- If you are not consecutively enrolled (excluding summer), you must submit a readmission application and follow the
course of study for the academic year in which you are readmitted. - If you earned credits at another institution that you would like to have evaluated for transfer, request that each institution
forward an official transcript to the Hocking College Registrar’s Office. Official transcripts must be mailed directly from
each institution to the Hocking College Registrar’s Office (Hocking College, Attention Registrar’s Office, 3301 Hocking
Parkway, Nelsonville OH 45764) or submitted through a formal transcript service such as Parchment or eScript. Faxed,
emailed or hand carried transcripts are not accepted.
3. TEAS V Exam
Complete the TEAS V Exam. Testing is offered at the Hocking College testing center (DVD 108) but you must first register for a testing date and pay ($70 non-refundable fee-Cost subject to change) for the exam on-line at www.atitesting.com.
- There are a limited number of seats available for each testing date and test registration closes 24 hours before each
scheduled date. Once you register and pay for the exam, you will be emailed an authorization number that you must
bring to the testing center on the day of your test with an approved ID. This must be either a driver’s license or state
issued ID - not a Hocking or other college ID. - You are allowed 4 hours to complete the exam which consists of reading, math, English and science.
- You may take the exam a total of three times and test scores do not expire.
- You are not required to have all other admission file completion requirements completed before taking the exam.
- Scores from TEAS exams taken elsewhere are not accepted.
- Review is HIGHLY recommended. Study materials are available in the Hocking College Student Success Center, on-
line, and in many libraries and bookstores. - It is recommended that you have some college course work completed prior to taking the TEAS V exam.
4. Physical and Immunization
A physical is required of all MLT students. Physicals are included in the all-inclusive tuition pricing and completed at the Hawk’s Center for Well-Being by appointment. If you choose to complete a physical at your personal physician (at your own out-of-pocket expense, a physical form must be completed by your health care provider, is available at the Logan campus, 30140 Iles Rd., Logan, OH 43138 and submitted to the program director or if directed by PD on Castlebranch. All
immunizations must be up-to-date and submitted successfully to program director or if directed by PD on Castlebranch.
Selection Criteria
Only students with a complete admission file by the last day of autumn semester will be considered for admission to the second semester of the MLT program.
Students with complete admission files will be rank ordered and admitted based upon their grade point average and TEAS score using
the following calculations:
- Cumulative Hocking College GPA ÷ 4.0 = % x 100 (For example: GPA 3.2 ÷ 4.0= .80 x 100 = 80 points)
- TEAS scores: Highest composite score (Reading + Math + English + Science ÷ 4 = composite score)
- Total GPA points + TEAS points = Ranking score
Notification:
- Applicants will be notified of selection via their Hocking College e-mail address in November 1 each academic year. Please
do not call for information regarding the selection results. Those not selected will be rank ordered on an alternate list. - If a selected student declines their seat before the start of spring semester, the first student on the alternate list will be offered
that seat. The process will continue until all seats are filled. - Students who remain on the alternate list after spring semester begins will need to reapply, along with other applicants, for
the next year. Alternate list placement does not guarantee a seat for the following year.
Progression from MLT Semester 2 to Semester 3
In order to progress from MLT semester 1 to semester 2 students must complete the following:

2. Complete BCI and FBI Criminal Background Checks
Information will provided in Semester 2 to complete this requirement. Background checks are only valid for 12 months. DO NOT complete this requirement until you are instructed to do so.
3. Complete Extended Panel Urine Drug Screen
Information will provided in Semester 2 to complete this requirement. Drug screens are only valid for 12 months. DO NOT complete this requirement until you are instructed to do so.
