Program Information

The Early Childhood Certificate is designed to enhance the quality of child care experiences by increasing and recognizing the competence of those who care for and education young children.  The Certificate introduces a student to the foundational skills needed in working with young children, ages birth to 5 years.    

In this program, students will study positive guidance strategies to help children develop and grow healthy relationships, and become problem solvers.  Students study and develop strategies for implementing developmentally appropriate learning experiences for young children.   In addition, students learn health, safety and nutritional aspects in providing well rounded care for young children.

Students who complete this certificate will earn credit toward completion of the Early Childhood Studies diploma and the Early Childhood Studies AAS degree.

What will you do

This certificate program is designed for people who are wanting to enter the field or are currently in the field but need additional education in order to provide quality care and broaden opportunities for promotion and career enhancement. Upon completion of this program, graduates will be eligible for Child Development Associate (CDA) certification from the Council for Professional Recognition. The CDA is a nationally recognized credential for those in the early care and education field, and it may be earned for preschool, infant/toddler, and family child care professionals.  To earn a Child Development Certificate students complete two classes in the fall and two classes in the spring.

This program increases opportunities for career advancement in addition to degree advancement through the Early Childhood Diploma and the Early Childhood Studies AAS program.  The Child Development Certificate can be applied to both the Diploma and the AAS degree.
