Program Objective:

The Phlebotomy program prepares individuals, under the supervision of healthcare professionals, to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of procedures. Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, research, or blood donations. Some explain their work to patients and provide assistance when patients have questions/concerns after their blood is drawn.

Program Content:

The purpose of this program is to prepare students for employment as phlebotomists SOC Code 31-9097 Phlebotomists, All other. The content includes but is not limited to communication, leadership, human relations, and employability skills; performance of safe and efficient work practices in obtaining adequate and correct blood specimens by capillary or venipuncture on adults, children and neonates; maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test to be performed; preparing blood smears; labeling specimens accurately and completely; collecting timed specimens; promoting the comfort and well-being of the patient while performing blood collecting duties; observing safety policies and procedures; medical terminology; emergency procedures including CPR (Heartsaver); delivering a variety of clinical specimens to the clinical laboratory; sorting and recording specimens received in the laboratory; centrifuging specimens and preparing aliquots of samples according to the designated protocol; distributing samples to appropriate laboratory sections; and preparing collection trays for specimen procurement.

Admission Requirements:

  • 16 years of age or older and not currently enrolled in any K-12 program

  • Occupational Interest

  • High School Diploma / GED from an Accredited High School

Completion Requirements:

The entire program is 165 hours but students can earn a certificate upon completion of the following OCPs:

Although there is no state licensure required for phlebotomists, graduates with required amounts of work experience may obtain certification from national crediting agencies such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT), and American Medical Technologists (AMT). Students are expected to complete program competencies.

Salary:

The average wage for this career in Florida is $16.78 hourly and $34,710 annually.

Financial Aid:

Financial aid is available to those who qualify. Applicants must have a high school diploma from an accredited High School, or its equivalent. Program Cost:

  • In-state residents – $2.56 per hour (Subject to change)

  • Out of state resident – $10.25 per hour (Subject to change)

  • $15.00 application fee per trimester

  • Material fee – $50.00

  • Identification fee – $5.00 per trimester

  • Liability/Accidental Insurance: $25.00

  • Students must purchase books/kits and/or uniforms, if applicable

  • Testing Fee: $117.00

Program Hours:

  • Monday – Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.
