  • The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Adult Echocardiography is designed to prepare students to use ultrasound as a medical procedure to view internal organs for diagnostic purposes.

Program Highlights

  • The program provides didactic, lab scanning and clinical instruction in cardiac anatomy, cardiac function, and non-invasive vascular imaging. Upon completion of this LSC program, graduates may apply to take the credentialing exams.

Credentials and Careers

  • The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a five-semester program comprised of 65 credit hours.
  • This program is designed to prepare graduates for employment in the healthcare industry in the sonography profession.

Transferability

  • General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.
  • Technical coursework may be transferable to other institutions.

  1. Student demonstrates the knowledge in preparation for the echocardiography registry exam.
  2. Prepare students to perform entry-level scanning protocols in echocardiography.
  3. Student demonstrates the ability to understand the workflow in the echocardiography field and perform professionally in the healthcare settings.

The Lone Star College-CyFair Diagnostic Medical Sonography Programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs ( CAAHEP, 9355 - 113th St. N, #7709, Seminole, FL 33775, 727-210-2350 www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS, 6021 University Boulevard, Suite 500, Ellicott City, MD 21043, 443-973-3251, www.jrcdms.org).

Professionals performing these examinations are known as sonographers. Upon completion of this Lone Star College program, graduates are eligible to take a credentialing exam.

Hospital requirements vary per facility and can include additional criminal background checks.

Consequences of Criminal Conviction

Notice of Potential Ineligibility for License

If you are applying for admission to a College program or enrolling in a College program that may prepare you for an initial occupational license issued by a Licensing authority and/or if you later decide to change to a program that prepares you for an occupational license, please be advised of the following:

  1. An individual who has been convicted of an offense may be ineligible for issuance of an occupational license upon completion of the educational program.
  2. Licensing authorities that issue an occupational license to an individual who completes the educational program issue guidelines stating the reasons a particular crime is considered to relate to a particular occupational license and any other criterion that affects the decisions of the licensing authority.
  3. A state licensing authority that issues guidelines files those guidelines with the secretary of state for publication in the Texas Register.
  4. Local or county licensing authorities that issue an occupational license to an individual who completes the educational program issue guidelines related to criminal history and post the guidelines at the courthouse of the county in which the licensing authority is located or publish them in a newspaper having countrywide circulation in that county.
  5. Applicants should contact their respective local or county licensing authority for more details.
  6. An individual may request a criminal history evaluation letter regarding the personal eligibility for a license issued by a licensing authority as required by Texas Occupation Code § 53.102.

All applicants to and enrollees are encouraged to review all applicable eligibility requirements related to the respective occupational license. Questions related to eligibility requirements should be directed to the applicable licensing authority.

Note: Immunizations may take up to 6 months or longer to complete; advance planning is necessary to meet deadline. Accepted students must provide written documentation of all immunizations and titers received. Refer to college-approved form found on the website.

Students must complete the following courses, with a grade of C or better, prior to submission of an application to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program:

  • PHYS 1410 - Elementary Physics,
  • BIOL 2404 - Intro to Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 2404 must be within 5 years)
    • Note: BIOL 2401 - Human Anatomy & Physiology I and BIOL 2402 - Human Anatomy & Physiology II (Both courses must be within 5 years) can be substituted for BIOL 2404. PHYS 1401 may be substituted for the PHYS course requirement.

Students must be able to carry out all assigned duties required of a practicing sonographer, such as:

  • Move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs.), transport patients by wheelchair & stretcher; push, pull, bend, stoop, reach, stretch routinely;
  • Work in dimly lit areas;
  • Stand on their feet for long periods (80%), up to 8-12 hours standing and/or walking
  • Lift/transfer more than 50 lb. routinely; assist patients; lift or turn disabled patients, carry 25 lbs. ;
  • Interact compassionately with patients;
  • Work stationary diagnostic imaging machines, and also may perform some procedures at patients' bedsides;
  • Maintain prolonged are positions necessary for scanning;
  • Adhere to privacy regulations (HIPAA);
  • Be available to work on short notice (on-call), nights & weekends (for employer).

Program students must maintain program determined minimum course grade average, meet all competencies and clinical requirements to progress to next semester.

Program designated uniforms are required.

Health insurance is required per clinical sites.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider CPR.

Drug testing is Required after initial/conditional acceptance. Student pays for the test.

An individual's request to transfer into any LSC sonography program will be reviewed on an individual basis by the program director, and only after meeting Lone Star College entrance requirements. Transfer students must meet all admission requirements of the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. It is recommended to allow a minimum of three months for processing. Class placement is based on previous achievement and space availability. Admission is considered only if prior program enrollment has been within one (1) year and the candidate is in good standing in a program or in previous program. All of the following steps must be completed for consideration.

  • Completion of official transfer application.
  • Written statement from the student describing his/her reasons for originally leaving the program.
  • Submit current official transcripts from any colleges or universities that the student has attended.
  • Submit three letters of his/her standing from the prior sonography program. One letter should be a report of status from the former program director.
