What is Human Services?

The Human Services program prepares individuals for entry level positions in agencies and institutions which provide social, community, educational and mental health services. Upon completion of the program the graduate is prepared to seek employment in various areas which may include child care facilities, mental health settings, chemical dependency settings, hospitals, educational institutions, correctional facilities, geriatric settings, child and youth centers, and social service agencies.

What are my career choices?

Workforce Kentucky reports that the Pennyrile region will experience a fast growing job outlook human services assistants with an 11% increase expected through 2020 with 6 annual openings and a mean salary of $25,975. Likewise, the Green River region can expect a very fast growing outlook with 33% growth rate through 2020 and 10 annual job openings $25,688 mean salary.

What are my degree, diploma, or certificate options?

Associate in Applied Science

Certificates

  • Aging Services (18 credit hours)
  • Client Service Coordinator (24 credit hours) 
  • Direct Support Work (15 credit hours) 
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Technician (27 credit hours)
  • Recovery Coach (24 credit hours)

Length of Program

Most students may complete an AAS program in two years, provided students enroll in the recommended number of credit hours per semester. General education classes, with the exception of course prerequisites, may be taken along with curriculum classes.

Transfer Options

Your associate in applied science degree in Human Services is transferable to bachelor of science programs at:

  • Western Kentucky University (Bachelor of Social Work),
  • Morehead State University (Bachelor of Social Work)
  • Murray State University (AAS into Bachelor of Integrated Studies or AA w/Human Services Framework into Bachelor of Social Work)
  • Kentucky State University (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology)
  • University of Pikeville ( Bachelor of Social Work)
  • Additional out-of-state transfer options may be available

Accreditation

Madisonville Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees.

Admission Requirements

This program has no special admission requirements. Please consult MCC s general admission requirements.

Graduation Requirements

You will be eligible for graduation when you have completed your program with a minimum grade point average of 2.0. In addition, you must have a minimum of 24 hours taken in residence within KCTCS and 25% of the approved coursework must come from Madisonville Community College.

The Office of Career Services offers students, alumni, and members of the community free assistance in locating regional and local employment opportunities. We are available to assist employers by referring qualified candidates for full-time, part-time, temporary, and cooperative education positions.
