What is Medical Information Technology?
Medical information technology graduates prepare medical records and reports, maintain files, perform accounting procedures, transcribe medical documentation, work with medical insurance and coding, and assist patients and healthcare professionals.
Savanna Garrity has been the program coordinator for the Medical Information Technology program since 1998. Prior to employment at the college, she worked for 7 years with Trover Foundation (currently Baptist Health) and 2 years at St. Jude s Children's hospital. She is a Certified Professional Coder with the American Academy of Professional Coders. She has a Master s in Public Administration as well. She is a hands-on instructor who enjoys incorporating humor and unique student activities to facilitate student learning. She teaches both face-to-face and online courses.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics states that medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 21 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. What are my career choices?
Depending on which option the student elects to study, they can expect to make between $20,000 - $30,000 per year with a fairly quick opportunity to increase to the mid $30,000 range. It is expected that healthcare careers will increase over the next 10 years.

Length of Program
The actual time it takes to complete any of the credentials offered in the program depends on the background and needs of each individual student. Most students want to know “How long will it take for me to complete this program?”. Some things to consider when determining how long it will take to complete the program includes the following: Do you have any completed or transfer coursework that can be used toward the credential? Do you have any development needs in reading, writing, or math? How many credit hours can you take each semester? All of these are variables in how long it will actually take to complete the program.
You can earn an associate in applied science degree in two years if you maintain full-time status.
