Health Information Technology Certificates

Health Information Technology Certificate in Release of Information (C45360A) 

This certificate is designed for those who are currently working in or are seeking jobs in clerical support roles in HIM departments, physicians’ offices, small to large group practice clinics, and hospitals. Clerical support jobs include administrative assistants, unit coordinators, patient registrars, and billing and reimbursement technicians. Course work provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and apply the processes and procedures of data collection, storage, maintenance, and retrieval in any healthcare setting.

Applicants must meet the Health Information Technology program admission criteria for the HIT degree or diploma, OR be eligible for college-level course work as evidenced by placement testing or a 2.0 unweighted high school GPA.

Graduates of the program may transfer all course credits to the HIT degree and/or diploma curriculum.

Health Information Technology Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding (C45360B)

The Medical Billing and Coding Certificate program is designed for students without coding work experience who are interested in pursuing medical billing jobs in a physician-based clinic or office setting. Medical billing specialists calculate charges, develop, and prepare bills for mailing, and ensure their accuracy. Employment opportunities include physicians’ offices and clinics, health departments, and hospital outpatient departments.

Applicants must meet the Health Information Technology program admission criteria for the HIT degree or diploma, OR be eligible for college-level course work as evidenced by placement testing or a 2.0 unweighted high school GPA, and completion of MED 121 with a C or better.

Graduates of the program may transfer some course credits to the HIT degree and/or diploma curriculum.

Health Information Technology Certificate in Healthcare Informatics (C45360IF)

The Health Informatics certificate will provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to assess the environment of clinical practice, make recommendations for adoption of related technology, and lead the implementation of IT projects related to the collection, storage, and management of patient data within electronic health record systems.
 
Coursework includes data collection, data sets and reporting for compliance, workflow analysis, the system development life-cycle with emphasis on impact within the clinical setting, vendor selection process, training of end users, and skills/tools used to manage IT projects.
 
Upon completion, the student will be able to explain data needs, capture methodology and retention of patient clinical data, perform an environmental assessment of data needs, prioritize clinical needs to determine vendor product selection, develop a plan for end user education/training, and create supporting end user training documentation.
 
Employment opportunities would exist within large healthcare organizations, physician practices, clinics and vendor sales.
