Criminal Justice
The program offers a foundation in criminal law, police administration, criminology, communications and writing skills. The program focuses on real-world application of criminological principles. Courses are taught by current and former law enforcement personnel, so students enrolled in the program will be able to gain valuable insight into the working world of law enforcement. The program provides graduates with knowledge and skills in:
- Law Enforcement, Security, Surveillance and Investigations
- Juvenile Justice
- Courtroom Procedures
- Corrections
- Anti-terrorism and Homeland Security Functions
Individuals currently employed in law enforcement and currently certified may be eligible for credit for criminal justice academy training by submitting official academy transcripts to the Admissions Office. The S.C. Criminal Justice Academy also accepts certain NETC courses.
ASSOCIATE DEGREE
Associate in Applied Science in General Technology – Criminal Justice - (AAS.GEN.CRJ)
The Northeastern Technical College (NETC) associate degree in General Technology-Public Service Criminal Justice track has been developed as a way for area residents to begin their career in public safety, or for those already in the sector to advance into supervisory and managerial roles. There are a wide range of roles in law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice, and other related fields in Chesterfield, Dillon and Marlboro Counties, and NETC is positioned to help get you there! Many of our students have already established careers in criminal justice, so there are opportunities for new women and men looking to break into the career field to network within our classrooms. Our Instructors come right out of the public safety career fields themselves, so are deeply knowledgeable about day-to-day duties and responsibilities, and bring the course content to life with relevant stories and experiences. CRIMINAL JUSTICE CERTIFICATES
Correctional Officer (CPS.COF) Certificate – 18 credit hours
NETC's Correctional Officer Certificate introduces a few more Public Safety courses to the student as they work toward earning their associate degree, and specifically prepares them for careers within the correctional system. Positions at both the South Carolina Department of Corrections' Evans facility, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons facility, both in Bennettsville, Marlboro County, provide a good salary, comprehensive benefits, stability and career satisfaction. The courses in this certificate will teach students how a Correctional Facility operates, including formal policies and protocols in place in light, medium and maximum-security prisons and detention centers. The students will participate in tours of detention centers and prisons to observe first-hand the work correctional professionals do daily. Students will learn types of techniques that are included in correctional institution best practices related to normal daily activity, as well as special situations that develop, in both jails and prisons. The student is introduced to several correctional officer careers and positions that are within federal, state, and local Correctional Facilities.
Pre-Police Academy Training (CPS.PAT) Certificate - 12 credit hours
The Police Pre-Academy Training (PPAT) certification is for individuals who seek to become employed as a law enforcement officer in South Carolina. These four courses are the initial classes needed for an individual to become a Class-1 Certified Law Enforcement Officers (LEO) through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) and the Law Enforcement Training Council (LETC) pursuant to South Carolina Code of Laws Chapter 23. NETC has developed this certificate program to support area Police and Sheriff Departments which have recently hired new personnel and need to provide the initial four courses before they head to Columbia to complete their Class-1 LEO training, as well as for residents who are interested in ultimately earning their Class-1 LEO and are not yet employed with a law enforcement agency. Students must enroll in the Associate of Science General Technology-Criminal Justice for this certificate.
