Palomar College is pleased to offer the Associate of Arts transfer degree Law, Public Policy and Society.

The Business Department will be deactivated the Legal Studies AA degree fall 2020.

Law, Public Policy and Society Legal Studies students may major or minor in Law and Society, which is a concentration in the BA in Sociology, upon transfer to the University of California, San Diego. Students who wish to double major at UCSD will be afforded maximum flexibility in the selection of elective courses. *Transfer students to University of California, San Diego extension Paralegal certificate program will receive credit for the asterisked courses. Legal Studies students should seek early advising for transfer.

  • LS/POSC 121 * Intro to Law
  • LS 240  Civil Liberties and Procedures
  • LS 145 * Legal Ethics

The Law, Public Policy and Society transfer degree follows two pathways; pathways to law school; and the CSU where it is deemed similar.  Locally, San Diego State accepts the degree as similar for Public Administration City Planning or General.  To best prepare students for San Diego State, it is recommended students  supplement the degree with additional coursework published on the attached ASSIST agreement; however, students may choose to complete these at SDSU after being admitted.

SDSU Public Administration City Planning and General supplemental courses to consider:

  • ACCT 201
  • ECON 101+102
  • CSIT 125 or BUS 104
  • BUS 204 is now articulated to ECON 201 or STAT 250 so this will work as an additional option and is on the AAT

The courses that will be scheduled in the Business Department on a regular basis are:

  • LS 145 * Legal Ethics

  1. Can I apply to the UCSD Extension Paralegal Program with an Associate’s Degree?

Although the UCSD Paralegal Certificate Program is a post‐baccalaureate program, students graduating from

Palomar College with an Associate’s Degree are eligible to enroll.

  1. How many credits will transfer to the UCSD Extension Paralegal Certificate Program?

Students who complete an Associate of Arts in Legal Studies at Palomar College may transfer up to nine credits in three pre‐approved courses.

  1. Which classes will transfer?

The courses that are currently approved for transfer are  LS 121/Introduction to Law, and LS 145/Legal Ethics.

  1. What if the courses were taken many years ago?

The American Bar Association requires that students complete all paralegal courses within a four‐year period. As a result, only credits earned within the four‐year period of study will be accepted. If you immediately enroll in the UCSD Paralegal Certificate program after two years at Palomar College, your courses will transfer for at least two years after your Palomar graduation.

  1. How do I transfer my courses?

Students wishing to transfer their Palomar courses should notify Julia Dunlap, Director of Business and Legal Education, that they intend to transfer courses at the time they begin their application processes. Her email is jdunlap@ucsd.edu.

  1. Do my grades transfer?

No, your grades will not transfer as this is essentially a course waiver.
