Emergency Medical Services

Published or Revised March 21, 2024

A career in Emergency Medical Services is a challenging and rewarding experience. As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic, you will obtain the knowledge and skills to care for someone who is ill or injured in an emergency situation.

Situations requiring care range from delivering a baby to cardiac arrest; for patients who have been involved in motor vehicle accidents to victims of house fires and job site accidents. No matter what the situation, you will know how to effectively care for that person.

Careers in this field may be found with fire departments, public and private emergency medical services, hospitals, industrial safety, and flight services.

EMTs are the entry level providers in emergency medical services (EMS). EMTs provide care at the Basic Life Support level for patients experiencing any type of emergency. Their care includes bandaging and splinting, basic airway management, automated external defibrillation, spinal immobilization, and vehicle extrication.

Paramedics are the highest level care providers in EMS. They provide care at the Advanced Life Support level for patients experiencing any type of medical or trauma related emergencies.

Paramedic level care includes advanced airway management; intravenous therapy; use of cardiac monitor/defibrillators and pacemakers; and medication administration.

The Paris Junior College Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
