Program Overview

The Social Work program prepares you to recognize the diversity of societal and geographic environments present in the region and beyond.  Here you will strive to promote social service professionalization through quality education and community service. The knowledge base of the program focuses on understanding the transaction between the person and society. Appreciating the values of the profession guides the student in developing appropriate attitudes necessary for the helping relationship. Practice skills result from both classroom and field experience. Development of the student’s self-awareness as an individual and as a social person is a prerequisite to developing skills in the use of the self as an agent of change. A programmed schedule, which outlines the sequence of required courses and elective options, is available and should be reviewed with an advisor from the program.

University Partnership Program (UPP)

University of Rio Grande is a proud participant in the University Partnership Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program (UPP). This program is Ohio’s commitment to improving outcomes for children and families by strengthening its child welfare workforce. It is a unique and beneficial partnership among the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), accredited social work programs at private and public universities around Ohio, Ohio’s University Consortium for Child and Adult Services (OUCCAS), the Public Children’s Services Association of Ohio (PCSAO), and Ohio’s 85 Public Children’s Service Agencies (PCSAs).

UPP Program benefits:

  • $5,000 employment incentive for those who complete the program and successfully gain employment in Ohio public child welfare.
  • Specialized coursework and training in child welfare.
  • “Fast-tracking” to full-time employment in child welfare upon graduation.
  • Individualized attention and mentoring by UPP coordinator and field instructors.
  • Early exposure to and networking in the field of child welfare.

UPP Eligibility

Current Bachelor of Science in Social Work students can apply. The program will allow you to specialize in public child welfare in your elective coursework and field practicum during the year prior to graduation. You will receive an employment incentive of $5,000 after earning a social work degree, committing to work for at least one year in an Ohio public children service agency, and obtaining employment at a public children services agency in Ohio.

Requirements
A minimum “C” grade in all identified coursework, i.e. social work, social and behavioral sciences, liberal arts foundation, is required to progress through the curriculum and for graduation from either the associate degree or baccalaureate program.

Program Overview

An Associate of Arts Degree Program with a Concentration in Social Services may be earned in two years. Admission to the Associate Degree in Social Services pre-professional program is open, and its completion is not required as a prerequisite for admission to the baccalaureate program. Students must demonstrate and maintain satisfactory progress (a minimum “C” grade) in required coursework to graduate. This course of study serves as a base of preprofessional education for the social services. Graduates of the associate degree program are not guaranteed admission to the baccalaureate Social Work Program. The curriculum in Social Services is administered by the faculty of the social work program as follows:

Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant

Program Overview

The short-term Chemical Dependency Counselor Assistant program provides students with competencies that enable them to work with people who are chemically dependent.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply/utilize written and computer skills to maintain appropriate client and agency reports, records and documents, especially the ability to navigate and effectively use Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in a clinical setting

  • Understand the history, philosophy, theoretical concepts/frameworks and clinical intervention skills related to Chemical Dependency professionals
