Program Overview

This program provides the required professional courses needed for both the New Jersey State and National Registry Certifications as a Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic. Instruction takes place in the classroom, hospital and in the field with preceptors on the Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU).

Rowan College at Burlington County follows the national standard curriculum promulgated by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Sponsorship

Students applying to Rowan College at Burlington County Paramedic Science program​ are required by New Jersey regulations to obtain a clinical sponsor. In-hospital clinical and field internship should be completed at the sponsor hospital and MICU. Sponsorship information and resources will be available for review by applicant during the candidate assessment process.

Applying to the Program

The program will admit students twice per calendar year, fall and spring semester. The following is information on the admissions process used to evaluate applications, candidates and prepare students for success.

Applying to RCBC does not automatically allow you to enroll in paramedic studies. Admission to the Paramedic Sciences program is selective and requires a separate application, basic EMT skills assessment and interview process.

In accordance with NJ OEMS regulation, all potential candidates must:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age;
  2. Have a high school diploma or GED;
  3. Hold a current and valid EMT certification;
  4. Hold a current American Heart Association, American Red Cross or National Safety Council CPR certification;
  5. Be physically capable of performing all required skills of a paramedic student; and
  6. Not have been convicted of any crime, or an offense involving drugs or moral turpitude.  An applicant may apply for a waiver of this requirement from the Commissioner of Health or designee.

In addition, the RCBC Paramedic Science Program requires:

  1. Completed Paramedic Science Program Application
  2. Anatomy and Physiology courses must be completed within the past five (5) years. If the course work is greater than (5) years old; students are required to retake or audit the courses at RCBC (BIO 110/111;BIO114/115);
  3. Students are required to obtain a “C” or better to transfer courses from another college or university if applicable. Please refer to the Paramedic Science Program curriculum for the exact list of general education courses;
  4. Students must complete a placement exam in order to confirm basic skills competency. Further information is supplied once the testing is completed.

What happens after completing the Fall 2024 Paramedic Science Admissions Application for Rowan College at Burlington County?

Program Accreditation

The Paramedic Science Program at Rowan College at Burlington County in partnership with Virtua Health System Inc. is accredited through the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). Additionally, the program is accredited by the New Jersey Department Office of Emergency Medical Services.

The most current CoAEMSP Annual Report provides information for the calendar year 2019. Success rates for year 2019 are available and success rates for 2020 will be available May 2022. The most recent success rate for the National Registry of EMT Paramedic/State Cognitive exam was 100%.  The most recent retention rate was 90%. Positive placement rate for graduates was 96.3%. Positive placement is defined by CoAEMSP as ‘Employed full or part-time in a related field and/or continuing his/her education and/or serving in the military’. Positive placement is measured at completion of the program. 

The overall program goal is to prepare competent entry level paramedics in cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels. Students will be prepared to become a nationally-registered paramedic (NREMT-P). The program combines classroom instruction with high fidelity laboratory simulation and clinical experiences to encourage critical thought in the care of patients requiring emergency assistance.
