What is the program about?

This program provides the education and skills needed by the fire service professional to function in the emergency services field. Courses include administration, inspection, investigation, building construction, fire hydraulics and water suppression systems. Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce as firefighters, fire officers, investigators, inspectors, instructors, or continue their education in fire science or public administration. This degree program contains one or more embedded certificates which will be automatically awarded when the certificate requirements are completed. Program Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the basics of fire service organization and fire department operations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, ethics and relationships with other public and private organizations.
  • Demonstrate the basics of firefighter safety and survival on the emergency scene.
  • Demonstrate professional communication skills, both written and orally.
  • Demonstrate the basics of fire prevention and inspection.
  • Identify and determine fire cause and factors contributing to fire spread.
  • Demonstrate operation and maintenance of fire protection systems.

Career Opportunities

In the next decade a majority of career fire service professionals with 25 plus years service will be retiring under the State of Ohio Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP). Replacement employees will be needed to fill openings not only for entry-level positions, but promotions in the officer ranks as well.

Transferability

Formal articulation agreements with other colleges and universities indicate how Sinclair programs and courses will transfer to other institutions.

Program Accreditation Information

The Firefighter I, II, Fire Safety Inspector, and Fire Instructor Classes are certification courses through the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Also Firefighter I and II, Fire Instructor I and Fire Officer I and II are accredited by the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications. We are currently in the process of extending ProBoard certification to Fire Instructor II, Fire Officer III and Fire Officer IV.
