The course provides skills training in three competency areas related to the job performance for medical assistants: administrative office, laboratory, and clinical. Coursework includes instruction in scheduling appointments, insurance coding and billing, medical transcription, computer operations, assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care. Upon completion, students will have the knowledge base to apply for national certification as a medical assistant.

This course will prepare the student for national certification as a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA). Students enrolled in the course will have the opportunity to learn the skills required to work in a medical office setting. Topics include medical terminology, communication skills, administrative duties, office procedures and introduction to insurance billing and coding. Upon completion of the class, individuals can apply to take the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Medication Aide Exam Prep for ACH (Adult Care Home) This class prepares students for the Medication Administration Exam administered by the NC Division of Facility Services. Students will learn policies and procedures for administering medications, including subcutaneous injections, drug interactions and side effects. The certification enables students to work in a group home, adult care home, assisted living facility or prison.

This class prepares students for the Medication Administration exam administered by Pearson Vue. Students will learn policies and procedures for administering medications in a variety of forms and includes drug interactions and side effects. The Medication Aide for skilled nursing facilities and Nurse Aide I certifications will enable the individual to work in a skilled nursing facility. High School Diploma Required. Limited Seating.

Course Requirements

High school diploma, GED or adult high school diploma required.

This course is designed to prepare graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and state-approved Nurse Aide I competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide I with N.C. Nurse Aide I Registry. Please note: Criminal background checks and random urine drug screens will be done once enrolled.

This course provides training in Nurse Aide II tasks. Emphasis is placed on the role of the Nurse Aide II, sterile technique and specific tasks such as urinary catheterization, wound care, respiratory procedures, ostomy care, peripheral IV assistive activities, and alternative feeding methods. Upon completion, graduates should be able to demonstrate knowledge in the performance of skills necessary for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide II Registry. Please note: Criminal background checks and random urine drug screens will be done once enrolled.

Nurse Aide I Refresher

This course is designed to provide a review of the Nurse Aide I core content to prepare individuals who have been or are currently listed on a Nurse Aide I Registry, have successfully completed a state-approved training program, hold a state-recognized health care credential from any state or military personnel who have had medical/ corpsman training, to sit for the Nurse Aide I State Exam. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and state-approved Nurse Aide I competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing/relisting as a Nurse Aide I with N.C. Nurse Aide I Registry.

Nurse Aide I Refresher Requirements

You must meet one of the following requirements in order to enroll in this course:

1. Have a current or previous listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry OR an out of state Nurse Aide I Registry within the past five years.
   • Verify your Nurse Aide I listing through the NC Nurse Aide Registry at www.ncnar.org.
   • Evidence of Nurse Aide I training program completion and a copy of your listing/certification is required at registration.
2. Have completed a state-approved NA I training program within the past two years (for students who have failed or not yet attempted the NC Nurse Aide I competency evaluation)
   1. Evidence of Nurse Aide I training program completion is required at registration.
3. Hold a state-recognized healthcare credential from any state
4. Military personnel who have medical/corpsman training or enrollees who have completed course(s) equivalent to NC Nurse Aide I content may enroll with the permission of the program director.

Gain the skills necessary to assist an optometrist or ophthalmologist with chairside skills, office procedures, patient care, exam, treatment and more. Completion of class and working with an ophthalmologist for one year will enable you to test for certification.

This course is designed to prepare individuals with the theoretical, technical, and clinical skills needed to assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, medical equipment and supplies, pharmaceutical care services, and other healthcare products and services for patients. Class format includes lectures, laboratory, and clinical activities. Successful completion prepares individuals for employment as a pharmacy technician in hospitals and pharmacies. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and the Pharmacy Technology Certification Exam (PTCE), the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)

In this class, you will prepare for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Students will review the eight main areas of testing as listed on the PTCB website. Students eligible to take this class include those who have completed the Pharmacy Tech course in the past 5 years and wish to take the exam, or those having an expired PTCB certification within the past 5 years, or those employed in the pharmacy setting wishing to take the exam.

This course is designed to prepare individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe, therapeutic patient care to individuals who have mental health/behavioral needs in an effective and ethical manner. Successful completion of this instruction will prepare students for Level I American Association of Psychiatric Technicians (AAPT) certification exam and entry level positions for Psychiatric Aids, Mental Healthcare Technicians and Healthcare Techs/Nurse Aids whose primary patient population has special mental health/behavioral needs.

This course provides theory and skills acquisition of the core concepts in substance abuse and dependence. Core topics include screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, client education, report and record keeping, consultation with other professionals regarding client treatment and services; and referral to treat addictive disorder or disease to help prevent relapse. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the etiology of drug abuse, addiction, prevention, and treatment.
