A phlebotomist is a professionally trained and certified person who works in a hospital, clinical laboratory, or health-care facility and obtains blood specimens from patients using a variety of intrusive procedures. In addition to technical, clerical, and interpersonal skills, the phlebotomist must develop strong organizational skills to handle a heavy workload efficiently and accurately.
Southern Technical Institute‘s Phlebotomy Technician diploma program prepares individuals to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of intrusive procedures and also prepares you to collect and process other clinical specimens within a healthcare setting.
Major Duties & Responsibilities of the Phlebotomist Include:
- Correct I.D. of the patient before collecting samples
- Collection of the appropriate amount of blood by venipuncture or skin puncture
- Selection of the appropriate specimen containers
- Correct labeling of all specimens
- Appropriate transportation of specimens to the laboratory
- Effective interaction with patients and other personnel in the workplace.
More Than Just Drawing Blood
Have you ever noticed that when a Phlebotomist draws your blood that they use several tubes with different color tops to collect the blood samples? Each one of those tubes has additives that provide a variety of measures to ensure that lab test are accurate. The Phlebotomy Technician program addresses these additives in great detail to ensure that you are well prepared to work with the most common ordered blood test within a healthcare facility.
At the successful completion of the program, you will be able to properly identify blood collection tubes by color, tube additives and how to address a variety of common ordered blood test collection requirements to ensure proper laboratory processing.
STI Phlebotomy Technician Program Will Prepare You To:
- Recognize and identify collection reagents supplies, equipment and interfering chemical substances.
- Understand and utilize the proper concept in correct order of blood specimen collection associated with the most common ordered laboratory test.
- Draw blood using a variety of procedures that include use of a vaccutainer, butterfly and syringe needles.
- Identify the anatomic structure and function of body systems in relation to services performed by phlebotomists.
- Practice infection control following universal (standard) precautions.
Clinical Externship
Once you complete all of the core training courses within the Phlebotomy Technician Program, you will be scheduled to perform a blood draw clinical rotation at a healthcare facility contracted through Southern Technical Institute. The clinical externship provides you with “real world” experience drawing blood and working with patients, as well as making a great addition to your resume to show Phlebotomy experience.

Upon successful completion of this program, you will receive a Phlebotomy Technician diploma and will be prepared to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam through National Healthcareer Association, hosted directly onsite at Southern Technical Institute. Becoming nationally certified will build more credibility in your credentials as you apply for employment working as a Phlebotomy Technician.
