What Is Medical Assisting C.A.?
The medical field is one of the fastest growing industries in the nation. As more doctors open new offices or join established practices the need for well-trained assistants increases. Medical assistants are trusted with huge responsibilities, both administrative and clinical. A day’s work may have you scheduling appointments, preparing patients for examination, recording vital signs, arranging hospital admissions, handling laboratory specimens, sterilizing instruments, calling in prescriptions, drawing blood, filing insurance, removing sutures, taking electrocardiograms, and more. Certificate programs prepare you for entry-level employment.
The Medical Assistant program consists of two semesters of program coursework including a 202-hour clinical externship, which concludes in a Certificate of Achievement and eligibility to sit for the state board exams through American Medical Technologists. Successful completion of state boards results in the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential.
This program prepares students to work as multi-skilled allied health professionals specifically trained in administrative, laboratory, and clinical processes. Core courses provide training for phlebotomy, sterilization techniques, minor surgery setup, office lab diagnostic procedures, and more. Medical assistants work side-by-side with physicians of all specialties, nurses, and others on the health care team, treating patients of all ages.

Complete the assessment test, when applicable, in the Assessment Center (SC 133)
Once accepted to the program, students must obtain the Basic Life Support - CPR for Healthcare Providers certification before they can begin program coursework. Program coursework begins in the fall, and seats are limited.

Students must complete a background check and drug screen. Findings may affect admission to the program
Students must provide their Social Security Number to initiate the background check
Students must provide proof of active health insurance and immunizations
Externships occur in the final eight weeks of the program in the spring semester
Students can expect to attend their clinical externship a minimum of 28 hours per week
