Human Services is an umbrella term covering a variety of professional activities that provide critical helping services to vulnerable populations and communities. Within the Human Services field, there is a need for highly skilled professionals to work with families, elders, people with disabilities, the unemployed, veterans and those dealing with substance abuse and others in need of services. Human Services professionals hold jobs in such diverse settings as group homes and halfway houses; correctional and community mental health centers; family, child and youth service agencies; and programs concerned with family violence and aging, and an array of organizations that support vulnerable populations across all communities. Depending on the employment setting and the types of clients served, the job titles and duties vary a great deal. The primary purpose of the human services worker is to assist individuals, families or communities to function as effectively as possible in the major domains of living.

Other Information
In order to graduate students must complete a 300-hour field placement covering two semesters (150 per semester) during the last half of the program. Assignments for the field placement exist in mental health, youth services, social services, eldercare, corrections, disabilities, rehabilitation, addiction and other human services.
Students must meet the receiving field placement agency screening requirements, such as the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) background check, prior to field placement assignment. Requirements will differ based on specific site policies.
Due to the Human Services program status as a nationally accredited program, students are eligible to sit for the Human Services Board Certified Practitioner Exam in their last semester.
Admission Requirements
Admission into this program requires proof of high school graduation (or GED) and qualifying placement levels.
