Information Technology programs provide education and training in the areas of Computer Information Systems: applied programming, end-user support, and networking.

Computer Networking

Computer network engineers are responsible for building and managing communications networks. These networks can be small, local networks (called local area networks) or they can be large, distributed networks (called wide area networks) that cross national and international boundaries. These networks also include the internet, company-wide intranets, and extranets that allow outsiders to a company’s intranet. Entry-level network engineering positions have an average starting salary of over $50,000 and experienced network engineers earn anywhere from $75,000 to over $100,000.

UA-PTC offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Computer Information Systems with a Computer Networking option. This degree program offers courses in two main areas – Cisco networking and Microsoft Server networking. The courses offered in this program can lead to two major certifications – Cisco’s CCNA certification and Microsoft’s MCSE certification. These certifications are usually required for entry-level positions in networking. The networking program also offers courses that lead to another popular industry certification – the A+ certificate.

There is a high demand for computer networking engineers. According to the BLS, employment for networking engineers is expected to grow by 9% annually through 2024.

Computer Programming

Computer programmers write code for applications for computers and for mobile devices. Experienced computer programmers often move into software design and analysis positions after they gain experience as programmers. The average entry-level salary for computer programmers is around $50,000 and experienced computer programmers have an average salary from $75,000 to over $100,000 for positions in large businesses. There are currently over 300,000 open computer programming positions according to the BLS.

UA-PTC offers two degrees for computer programming – the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Computer Information Systems with a Computer Programming option and the Associate of Science in Technology and Engineering (ASTE). This second-degree program is primarily designed for students who want to transfer to a four-year degree in Computer Science. However, the ASTE degree, as well as the AAS degree, provide the student with the knowledge and experience they need to gain employment as an entry-level computer programmer.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is designed for students who are interested in monitoring, securing, and analyzing data networks, and cybersecurity operation centers. Students acquire a broad understanding of how to detect, protect, and analyze computer networks threats and the skills needed for an entry-level position in cybersecurity.

UA-PTC offers an Associate of Applied Science in Cybersecurity, Cybersecurity Technical Certificate, and a Cybersecurity Certificate of Proficiency.
