Program Overview

AS / 84 Credits

The Dental Hygiene program is a four semester and one summer session program within a cohort that prepares individuals to work in general and specialty dental offices, and public health agencies. Emphasis is placed on the correlations among prevention, education, and the clinical phases of dental hygiene practice as well as basic and social sciences. The curriculum is organized in accordance with requirements of the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation for a Dental Hygiene program and with consultation from the Maui County Dental Association. The Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council of Postsecondary Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. You will earn an Associate in Science (AS) Degree in Dental Hygiene upon completion of the program.

The Dental Hygiene Associate in Science Program is a two-year program (upon admission to the Dental Hygiene Program) 

The program consists of four semesters and one summer session, approximately 66 weeks in length. The UH Maui College Dental Hygiene Program is known for its smaller class size, one-on-one training and compassionate faculty & staff.

Clinic times are:

Tuesday: 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
Wednesday: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm

*** Appointments may take longer than a private dental office being that we are students in a learning environment.

Attention: Interested/Incoming Dental Hygiene Program Students

Due to recent American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation recommendations,
changes have been made to the admission requirements for the Dental Hygiene Program at UH
Maui College. Applicants are now required to complete the following:

1) Psychology 100 (3 credits)
2) Sociology 100 (3 credits)
3) Humanities: COM 130 or SP 151 – (3 credits)

Note: COM 145 will no longer be accepted for the Dental Hygiene Program.

    • 100% of UH Maui College DH graduates are licensed as well as gainfully employed.

The Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council of Postsecondary Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. Graduates are eligible to take the National Board of Dental Hygiene Exam, National Clinical Examination, and apply for licensure with the Hawai‘i Board of Dental Examiners. Each State has its own requirements but they all require the NDHBE results and clinical exam.
