Certified Nursing Assistant

After completing classroom time and passing competency tests, students will receive a UNM-LA certificate and be eligible to test for certification through Prometric.

Students will learn to…

• Administer CPR and first aid,
• Deal with tubes (ostomy, catheter, drainage tubes),
• Measure and record input and output,
• Monitor vital signs and keep records,
• Move a patient from bed to a wheelchair,
• Perform range of motion exercises,
• Walk with a walker or cane or gait belt.

 

Other areas of study include…

• Basic anatomy and physiology,
• Changes in diet with aging and illness,
• Common chronic or acute conditions,
• Fall prevention,
• Human development and aging,
• Infection prevention,
• Hospice and hospital care.

 

The CNA program is a 1- semester (16 week) program and the single course (CNA 101) is 8 credits. It includes a minimum of 75 clock-hours of training, which includes a minimum of 16 hours of supervised patient care in a clinical setting. The cost to the student would be tuition and fees for 8 credits, plus fees for needed vaccinations and a background check.

 

The eight credit hour class, CNA 101, is a one semester course.
Course includes 32 hours of clinical training at a nursing or rehabilitation facility in addition to classroom time.

Our program has determined it meets professional licensure requirements in the state of New Mexico. It has not determined it meets professional licensure requirements in any other state.
