Pre-Engineering

Pre-Engineering

Engineers apply the principles of science and mathematics to develop solutions to real world problems. Their work is the link between scientific discoveries and real life applications. Engineers are involved in all aspects of product development, from design and testing to production and maintenance. Whether its computer chips, bridges, or fuel cells, engineers are involved in every phase. Most engineers specialize in one discipline: chemical, civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, or nuclear engineering.

About the program

The Associate of Science in Pre-Engineering is designed to be the first two years of a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the disciplines. In this program, you will complete the majority of your general education requirements and begin to specialize in one of the engineering disciplines. Upon completing the degree, you will be able to seamlessly transfer to an engineering program at UNM Albuquerque or other four-year program.

We are currently developing cohorts of students who will proceed through the program together in their area of specialization. Our staff works closely with the Bachelor and Graduate Program through Extended University to help students pursue a bachelor's or graduate degree in engineering on the UNM Los Alamos campus. Other students choose to transfer to an engineering program elsewhere. The program helps students find internships in their field.
