Fire medics cross-train in the areas of emergency medical services and fire protection/suppression. They respond to all types of emergencies, such as house fires, traffic accidents and rescue situations. Develop skills in emergency medical response at the paramedic technician level; learn about fire behavior, firefighter safety and survival; and develop critical thinking skills for effective emergency response.

A State of Wisconsin EMT-Basic, or higher, license is required for participation in this program. Students must also have obtained their Wisconsin State Firefighter I Certification to enroll in the Fire Medic program.

Apply for the Program

  • Apply online and pay the $30 application fee.
  • Submit proof of WI Firefighter I Certification by email.
  • Submit a copy of your current (non-expired) State EMS license or NREMT certification by email.
  • Submit a copy of one of the following to demonstrate your reading, writing and math skills:
    • High school GPA of 2.60 or above. Transcript must include completed coursework through the 11th grade.*
    • ACT, ACCUPLACER® or GED - 2014 Series (165 or higher).*
    • Prior college coursework may meet this requirement in whole or in part. Courses must be in the specific area(s), and you must have earned a grade of C or better (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) in the courses.*
    • If none of the above apply, sign up for the ACCUPLACER® placement test.

If you are committed to helping others during a critical time of need, a career as a fire medic may be right for you. Those working in this area must be physically and mentally strong, but must also be resilient and adaptable as situations can change from one minute to the next.

You must first complete the Emergency Medical Technician program and Firefighter 1 training in order to apply to this program.

$30,500 – $59,400 annually

What Makes This Program Unique?

Graduates are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians – Paramedic written and practical examinations in order to be licensed as an EMT-P in Wisconsin.

The fire courses in this program are recognized by the National Fire Academy Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) program, and students will receive a certificate from the National Fire Academy for their coursework at the completion of each course.

Students will have the opportunity to attend clinical rotations at local area hospitals in the emergency department, operating room and OB unit.
