If you would like to work in health care but don’t want to provide direct patient care, medical record coder is a good career choice. Medical record coders work with nurses, physicians and other health care professionals to ensure medical records are complete, accurate and secure. Technical skills are important because medical record coders must use coding and classification software. They should also understand medical diagnoses so they can code them in patient’s records. Integrity is a must because medical record coders work with patient information that is required to be kept confidential.

The mission of the medical coding program is to teach the fundamental medical coding skills for professional services (physicians, mid-level providers, etc., to include CPT, ICD-10-CM Code Set, and HCPS Level II. It prepares the student to take the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam.
