Program Description

The Radiography, A.A.S. program prepares graduates to practice as a proficient, professional radiographers in diverse health care settings. Through courses in patient care and management, radiographic procedures, radiation protection, equipment operation and quality control, image production and evaluation, and clinical practice, students progress from the learning phase to the multi-skilled, practitioner phase. Students will be prepared with the skills necessary to perform radiologic examinations that produce high-quality diagnostic images to be used in the diagnosis and treatment of patient disease.


The program is structured to allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree and qualify and prepare them for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) board exam upon successful completion of all required courses.

Mission

The Radiography Program of Prince George's Community College prepares students to practice as proficient, multi-skilled professionals in diverse healthcare settings.

Radiography Program Goals - Graduates:

  • will be clinically competent;
  • apply critical thinking skills;
  • demonstrate professional growth and development; and
  • communicate effectively.

  • Properly position patients for various radiographic procedures
  • Select correct exposure factors for various radiographic procedures
  • Apply radiation protection principles to protect patient, self, and others
  • Modify positioning based on patient condition to obtain diagnostic-quality radiographic images
  • Critique radiographic images for diagnostic quality
  • Demonstrate professional behavior consistent with the Code of Ethics set forth by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
  • Demonstrate effective oral communication skills in the practice of radiography
  • Demonstrate effective written communication skills in the practice of radiography
  • Explain the importance of continued professional development for the radiologic technologist

Transferability

Credit earned at any public institution in the state shall be transferable to any other institution if the:

  • Credit is from a college or university parallel course or program;
  • Grades in the block of courses transferred average 2.00 or higher; and
  • Acceptance of the credit is consistent with the policies of the receiving institution governing students following the same program. Refer to ARTSYS at artweb.usmd.edu and the receiving institution's catalog to select transferable courses.
