A Medical Assistant is a valuable member of the healthcare team. They perform daily administrative tasks as well as assisting in minor clinical procedures to keep doctor's offices, hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities running smoothly. According to the United States Department of Labor, the Medical Assistant profession is expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the next ten years.
This program prepares students to be multi-tasked members of the health care team in a clinic, physician’s office or other medical facilities. Administrative competencies train the students in medical and legal issues, professionalism, communication skills, safety, medical equipment maintenance, computing, bookkeeping, and in medical office skills. Clinical competencies train the student to work in direct patient care. Students are trained to handle specimens, draw blood, give medications, and give immunizations. Clinical classes include anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, laboratory procedures, electrocardiology, and phlebotomy. Students will have the opportunity to become certified phlebotomists.
Graduates of the CMA certificate option and AAS graduates are eligible to take the national certification examination through the AAMA and/or AMT.
The Certificate of Completion Medical Assisting program is fully accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) (9355-113th St. N, #7709, Seminole, FL 33775; Phone: 727-210-2350; www.caahep.org). Upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).

Administrative Medical AssistantCertificate of Completion
The Certificate of Completion in Administrative Medical Assistant prepares students to work in the out-patient clinical setting and hospital institutions by providing clerical support to all health professionals by performing a variety of duties such as; Scheduling and confirming patients appointments, Handling Billing, Bookkeeping and Insurance Processing, Creating and Maintaining Medical Records, Handling Correspondence, Answering and Routing Telephone Calls, Arranging for Hospital Admissions. Students learn about medical law & ethics, medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, medical insurance, including patient registration. Administrative psychomotor competencies include; Telephone calls triage, taking messages, insurance coding and filing, greeting the patient, assist the patient with community resources, and handling emergency situations. Successfully completing the Administrative Medical Assistant coursework of 18 credit hrs. allows the student to receive a certificate of completion level 1 as an Administrative Medical Assistant, a certificate on fire safety provided by the emergency management department at EPCC and the vision & hearing certificate provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

This program does not follow the Specialized Admissions procedure, but it does require students to fulfill certain program-specific criteria including (but not limited to): minimum GPA, a background check, substance abuse screening, and immunizations/titers. The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Medical Assisting Technology prepares students to work in direct patient care, administrative clinic offices, doctor offices, or other medical facilities. Students learn about medical ethics, terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, phlebotomy, EKG’s, laboratory procedures, and clinical procedures, including patient preparation and screening.
