  • The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Program prepares graduates for wide ranging career possibilities as entry-level technicians to data analysts and project managers in diverse fields of GIS application.

Program Highlights

  • From data collection and input, to management and analysis, to project completion and information delivery, individuals will develop the skills to work at many levels of business, industry, government agencies, and research and development.

Credentials and Careers

  • The GIS Technician Level 1 Certificate focuses on proficiency in GIS software applications and data management.
  • The GIS Systems Analyst Level 2 Certificate provides graduates additional skills to develop and analyze data and prepare projects for delivery to clients.
  • The Associate of Applied Science in Geographic Information Systems provides graduates with the essential skills to manage the initiation, development and completion of GIS projects requiring data collection, data management, analysis, map product development and final report writing for presentation.
  • Employment opportunities are far reaching at the present time; the increasing use of GIS in nearly every field of education, business and government is creating a strong need for skilled personnel.

Transferability

  • Program graduates may further their education at Lone Star College by applying to the Bachelor of Applied Science in Energy, Manufacturing, and Trades Management.
  • General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.
  • Technical coursework may be transferable to other institutions.

  1. Apply essential skills required for spatial data collection, and the creation of spatial datasets, utilizing techniques such as GPS field data collection, digitizing, and internet research.
  2. Apply essential skills required for the management of GIS data, utilizing tools such as attribute queries, location queries, and relational joins.
  3. Apply essential skills required for the spatial analysis within the GIS, using tools such as proximity functions, overlay processes, raster statistical functions.
  4. Apply essential skills required for the production of cartographic deliverables, utilizing techniques for the proper and effective use of map elements and cartographic design.
  5. Create final reports of GIS analysis and present reports and maps to an audience.
