Program Details
An expanded study of dental assisting techniques with emphasis on four-handed dentistry and utilization of medicines, equipment and techniques for general practice and specialty procedures. This course focuses on office procedures, communication skills, basic dental anatomy and instrumentation, basic equipment operation and maintenance, preparation of examination and treatment areas, infection control, safety issues and clinical dental radiology. Also, dental assisting techniques with emphasis on four-handed dentistry and utilization of tray setups for general practice and specialty procedures.

- Lone Star College (LSC) offers an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene at LSC-Kingwood. This program is designed for those interested in becoming a registered dental hygienist.
Program Highlights
- The dental hygiene curriculum offered at LSC-Kingwood is a structured intense program with didactic and clinical practice taking place at the Lone Star College-Kingwood campus. External rotations are integrated into the curriculum for experiences outside of the school setting.
Credentials and Careers
- The AAS in Dental Hygiene includes general education courses as a foundation for dental hygiene courses. Prerequisite courses are designed to allow the student an opportunity to experience the type of coursework that will be involved in the study of dental hygiene. The program is comprised of 68 credit hours and is completed in two years.
- Graduates are prepared to function in a variety of settings including private dental offices, dental clinics, or public dental health care clinics.
Transferability
- General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.
- Technical coursework may be transferable to other institutions.

The dental hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and has been granted the accreditation status of approved without reporting requirements. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Graduates of the Lone Star College – Kingwood Dental Hygiene program are eligible to sit for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and regional clinical board examinations which are required by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners for licensure.
Criminal background check is required. Admission decision is contingent on a negative background check.
Student is responsible for providing proof of current immunizations including MMR, Tetanus, and negative TB skin test. Proof of the complete series of Hepatitis B Immunizations or proof of immunity is required prior to the first day of class.

Due to the sequencing of courses within the dental hygiene curriculum, a student will be dismissed from the dental hygiene program if the student fails one or more courses in any given semester.
An individual's request to transfer into the Lone Star College-Kingwood Dental Hygiene Program will be reviewed on an individual basis by the program director, and only after meeting Lone Star College entrance requirements.
- Transfer students must meet all admission requirements of the Dental Hygiene Program.
- Any student requesting a transfer into the Lone Star College-Kingwood Dental Hygiene Program must have earned at least a "C" in all transfer courses. It is recommended to allow a minimum of three months for processing.
- Class placement is based on previous achievement and space availability.
- Admission is considered only if prior program enrollment has been within one (1) year and the candidate is in good standing in a program or in previous program.
- All of the following steps must be completed for consideration.
- Students who were required to exit their original program for academic reasons must repeat all academically deficient courses and may be required to audit other program courses offered in the same semester.
- Students who were asked to leave their original program for violation(s) of the college or program's code of conduct, ethical standards, academic dishonesty, civil rights or harassment policies may be ineligible for transfer.
