In cooperation with Reading Area Community College (RACC), the associate degree program in Respiratory Care prepares students to assume Respiratory Care positions as part of the health care team. Respiratory care students participate in various classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences. The laboratory provides the opportunity for hands-on experience in preparation for clinical practicum. The classroom courses give students foundational knowledge in Respiratory Care.
This collaborative program allows students to complete general education requirements at Northampton Community College. Upon completion on general education requirements, students would apply to the Reading Area Community College Respiratory Care Program.
Students spend the first semester of their second year at NCC on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and at RACC Tuesday and Thursday. The spring semester of students' second year is spent at RACC on Monday and a clinical rotation program Tuesday through Friday. Students are able to complete a clinical rotation at a location closer to their home.
Students enrolled in the Respiratory Care Program are able to pay in-county tuition rates, regardless of county of residence.
This program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care. Graduates are therefore eligible to take a national certifying exam to become a certified or registered Respiratory Therapist.
Provide, under medical direction, treatment, management, diagnostic evaluation and care to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiorespiratory system.
Administer the therapeutic use of the following: medical gases and administration apparatus, environmental control systems, humidification, aerosols, medications, ventilatory support, bronchopulmonary resuscitation and airway management.
Demonstrate behavior consistent with acceptable professional conduct standards such as appearance, quality of work, quantity of work, continuing education, human relations skills, leadership skills, reading skills, writing skills and verbal communication skills.
