Surgical Services

Modern surgical teams rely on a wide range of medical team members to provide the best care to a patient undergoing a surgical procedure. If you are interested in working in a surgical setting with the latest medical equipment, consider a career in surgical technology, hospital central service or operating room nursing.

Surgical Technology, Operating room, Hospital central service students You will gain real-world experience with our simulated operating room, surgical instruments, equipment and supplies — developing skills requiring manual dexterity, acquiring knowledge of aseptic technique processes and learning how to work closely with surgeons and the surgical team.

The Hospital Central service student will complete a 400 hour clinical and be eligible to sit for the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) upon completion of the program.

As a surgical technology student you have the option to receive an additional credential by completing a 400 hour Hospital Central Service Technology practicum, making you eligible to take the Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) certification examination. Upon completion of the surgical technology courses you will sit for the National Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) examination.

Future work environments may range from hospital operating rooms, surgical centers, or other outpatient settings to the surgical equipment industry and even veterinary services. Upon completion of our courses, a surgical technology student will you may take the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam with confidence.

GateWay Community College is known in the community for its healthcare education and training excellence and is the only college in the Maricopa Community College to offer the Surgical Technology programs. 

With additional training in the Surgical Technology field, you may expand your role and advance to Certified Surgical Technologist First Assistant. First Assistants function under the direction of the surgeon, and will help with sponging, suturing, retracting and closing wounds during surgery.

All students interested in any of our Healthcare programs will be required to attend an Information/Advising session, which will provide in-depth information and enrollment guidance.

GateWay is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Our Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).

GateWay's program was recognized as a leader in student preparation and examination success for the 2012-2013 academic year by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.

Why should you choose an accredited school?

Although many schools offer seemingly similar degree and certification options, not all schools are accredited. In many instances, accreditation of the degree or program you complete may be required in order to become certified to work in the field.
