The Medical Assisting program prepares competent Medical Assistants with cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains to enable them to perform entry-level administrative and clinical tasks in a physician’s office.

What are the job duties for Medical Assistants?
Medical assistants perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician.
- Administrative duties may include: scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes
- Clinical duties may include: taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by a physician.
How long does it take to complete the program?
The program is designed to be completed in two semesters.
Co-requisite coursework can be completed prior to starting the program.
Which semester should I start the program?
The program begins only in the FALL semester.
How do I apply for the program?
Applications are available online, on an ongoing basis. If you wish to obtain a Medical Assisting application, please email Marc Smith, Nursing & Allied Health Coordinator, at m4smith@lbcc.edu.
Information sessions are held on a monthly basis to help answer any questions you may have regarding the program.
Are there any requirements to apply for the program?
No requirements are needed to apply to the program.
However, a High school diploma, GED, or HiSet is required to enroll in the program, not required for the application.
How many students are accepted into each program?
The program accepts 40 students into the program, based on first come first serve, application submission.
Is the Medical Assisting Program at LBCC accredited?
Yes. We are an accredited program by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
CAREER INFO
The Medical Assistant Program is designed to educate the student for immediate employment providing assistance to the physician in caring for patients in the medical office or clinic. The wide range of clinical and business duties provides an interesting career for one who enjoys working with people. The program is designed to be completed in one academic year and includes either administrative or clinical assisting courses or a combination of both. The program offers an Associate Arts/Science Degree in the Combined Certificate Program Option or a Certificate of Achievement in the Administrative or Clinical Certificate option. The department also offers Certificates of Accomplishment in Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Insurance Billing, or Phlebotomy.
You can be working in healthcare careers in less than 10 months. Use the medical assistant career as a stepping stone to reach your healthcare aspirations.
POTENTIAL JOBS
This Certificate of Achievement will prepare students for an entry-level position in a variety of ambulatory settings. Each certificate is the foundation for specialized clinical practice.
