The Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology at Fletcher Technical Community College is a six semester, 63 credit hour program. It consists of one semester of pre-requisite coursework and five semesters of surgical technology courses. The prerequisite courses are offered face-to-face day and/or evening, and online. Classes in the surgical technology program meet face-to-face Monday – Friday.

Upon successful completion of the curriculum, the student will qualify to take the National Certification Exam for Surgical Technologists. The certifying exam is written and administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) are integral members of the surgical team who work closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel delivering patient care before, during, and after surgery. Their primary responsibility is maintaining the sterile field. The CST handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Certified Surgical Technologists have an understanding of the procedure being performed, anticipate the needs of the surgeon and have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure. The student should recognize that the clinical rotation of the Surgical Technology program demands that attitude; work habits, communication skills and manual dexterity are developed and evaluated along with academic readiness.
