In just eight weeks*, MassBay prepares Nurse Assistant Training students for the Red Cross Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation (NACE) test and for an entry-level career in health care as a Nurse Assistant. In this 120–hour certificate training program (80 lecture/laboratory hours on campus and 40 clinical hours at a long-term care facility), students will learn how to perform routine healthcare tasks for today’s increasingly diverse population. The course will include Medical Terminology course, basic skills training, such as the fundamentals of how to check and monitor vital signs and deal with a wide range of patients’ and residents’ needs. Other topics include the roles and responsibilities of the Nurse Assistant; understanding the elderly; safety; food service; personal care; elimination; restorative nursing; use of assistive devices; hygiene and infection control; and work ethics of a professional member of the nursing and health team. Classes are held on MassBay’s Framingham campus and are small, ensuring an intimate student-centered environment. Theory and practice of surgical asepsis are the focuses of the program. Students develop knowledge and skills in maintaining aseptic technique within the surgical areas of health care delivery. The curriculum combines didactic, college laboratory and clinical experience with an emphasis on acquiring clinical skills. The study of operating room technology is planned sequentially, making use of all prior learning so that students can synthesize course material and focus on applying it in operating room practice. Students will have clinical experiences in a variety of surgical cases, including endoscopic and obstetrics. Students must pass the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Association) Certifying Examination, which is approved by the NBSTSA Advisory Board.
