The Alternative Fuels and Emissions Certificate program provides workforce training opportunities through partnerships with employers that will prepare students for careers in the diesel industry. In order to address the employment gap in the diesel industry and the opportunity, Massasoit Community College has designed a comprehensive program to educate students in the classroom and on the job.
The Alternative Fuels and Emissions Certificate program prepares students for careers as bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists. Upon completion, students will have the basic skills needed to operate, diagnose, repair, and overhaul buses and trucks, including maintaining all types of diesel engines in the transportation, construction, and agricultural industry sectors. In partnership with Milton CAT and Waste Management, the program provides hands on instructions that will be transferred over into the workplace. Students can earn this certificate in as few as three consecutive semesters (24 credits) while on their way to completing an Associate Degree in Diesel Technology; the certificate is only available to students who are enrolled in Diesel Technology.
Massasoit’s Diesel Technology curriculum prepares students to enter the industry at the mechanic level. After gaining experience, graduates of the associate-level program can expect to move into a position with the potential of advancing to shop foreman, service manager, branch manager, service writer, or field technical service representative; some alumni even run their own businesses. The U.S. Department of Labor is predicting a 12 percent growth in employment for diesel engine specialists in Massachusetts, with 580 projected annual job openings through 2026.

The Diesel Technology program trains technicians to maintain, repair, and overhaul diesel engines and support systems. Through lectures and lab instructions, this program provides students with a broad range of knowledge and skills necessary to work within the dynamic field of diesel technology. The Associate in Applied Science curriculum prepares students to enter the industry at the mechanic level. After gaining professional experience, graduates of the associate-level program have the potential to advance to shop foreman, service manager, branch manager, service writer, or field technical service representative.

Students learn how to disassemble and assemble various components used in the diesel industry to manufacturers’ standards. Key components of the program include diagnosing and repairing electrical components and wiring used in the diesel industry, as well as using manufacturers’ manuals in performing assigned work.

Students also learn to follow the safety standards of a heavy-equipment shop environment, apply theory and principles for proper maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of systems and components related to the construction, agricultural, marine, and transportation industries, and recognize potentially hazardous situations in the industrial workplace.

Architectural Technology stresses skills in applying steel framing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and other engineering principles to building design. Enrollees in our HVAC – Building Energy Systems Management Associate of Applied Science (AAS) program study an updated curriculum that reflects the need of emerging trends in the HVAC industry and engage in lab activities on new, state-of-the-art equipment.

Graduates with an AAS degree in Building Energy Systems Management from Massasoit gain the knowledge necessary and ability to:

produce heating and cooling load calculations for residential and commercial buildings;

The paramedic is a health care professional that cares for those injured or suddenly taken ill in the pre-hospital setting. Massasoit offers quality training in Medical Assisting through a nine-month (full-time) certificate program on our Canton campus.

Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to become credentialed through the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants after passing the CMA (AAMA) Certification Examination.

Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks. Duties vary with type of practice.

Administrative duties include greeting patients, demonstrating effective communication skills in a professional manner, telephone interaction, scheduling appointments, utilizing electronic health records, and practice management software programs.

Clinical duties include obtaining medical histories, recording vital signs, preparing patients for examinations (pediatrics to gerontology), performing EKG’s, sterilization of instruments, collecting and identifying specimens, routine urinalysis, fecal analysis, clinical bacteriology, and phlebotomy. Medical assistants who work for specialists will have additional duties.

A seven week/245-hour clinical practicum in a health maintenance organization/health care facility is required for graduation.

Radiology Technician

Radiologic Technology, A.S.

The Radiologic Technology program at Massasoit prepares students for entry-level careers as radiologic technologists in a variety of clinical healthcare settings; it is competency-based and can be completed in 21 months.

Upon graduation, students receive an Associate in Science Degree in Radiology Technology. Program graduates are eligible to apply for the national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Individuals who pass the examination are known as Registered Technologists in (Radiography), RT(R).

Radiologic Technology at Massasoit is a selective admissions program and is highly competitive. All applicants are reviewed by a committee by means of a rubric in order to assure fair and ethical selection practices.

Through coursework and clinical experiences, students learn how to perform radiographic examinations, think critically and solve problems in their practice of radiology procedures, communicate effectively with staff and patients, and employ radiation safety practices.

Massasoit Radiography graduates who have successfully passed the national certification examination have found employment in various hospitals, clinics, portable radiology and private physicians’ offices. Several of our students have continued their education by attending specialty schools in ultrasound, radiation therapy, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, computerized tomography, computerized tomography, and densitometry.
